Small rant time..
Basically i have been busy taking the engine out of my corsa ready for the new owner to pick up, all the bits in boxes to get the engine back up to scratch, great!
Then i get to taking the wiring loom out.... And what a crock of shit it was!!
What they had basically done is take the standard ECU and rip it apart leaving the pins inside the ecu there along with the connector, they have then soldered the omex side of the loom to it, leaving the original loom in tact, cutting the redundant connectors off and tapeing the wires up at the end. The they clearly couldnt get the original fuel pump relay to work, so bodged in a crappy 4 pin relay and left both hanging in the inner wing..
Alot of the wires had soldered in joins, Solder = BAD
So my mission was to sort out the mess:
Mmmmm all that loom for 4 sensors, 4 injectors and a coil pack
I mean WTF is this crap?? ECU side btw...
Loom side... Nice bit of corrosion there too, and sooooo many wires that arent needed!
No pics of the work i did, but the Loom is now solder free, no crap connections, all wiring repaired, original fuel pump relay wired up properly, redundant wires removed etc etc... Amazing what you can do with the proper wiring diagrams and a brain...
The new loom, wrapped nicely in proper loom tape, not insulating tape..
The removed stuff...
Rant over.... about 5 hours work there too, proper job!

Also i found some amusing things in there too, like the coding plug for what grade fuel your using wired into the air temperature input on the omex, (hows that going to work )
And an attempt to take a feed off the wire for the temperature guage

I have joined the wires with Duraseal connectors, basically crip connectors, but are heat shrink also to prevent moisture getting to the joins..
Two reasons why solder isnt that great:
1) Its a dry joint and can crack and come apart
2) Its two different metals (copper and whatever solder is made from) and is suseptable to corrosion - a bit like when your alloys get stuck to the hubs because the two metals react to each other
These are the two main reasons i dont use solder.. however there are times when solder is useful - eg when there isnt enough space to use a duraseal connector

leave the battety disconnected overnight...
Failing that, most faults in modern ecus clear if they dont reappear after a few hundred miles iirc
