I always hear of gearboxes going on these 106's, they can't be that bad, surely?

Well i'm getting quotes of £250 for clutch fitted inc VAT. I would get my brother to fix it but he's off work after an argiment with me and he now has a bad back! So he won't do it for me! And i don't fancy doing it, plus i'd like to get a warranty on it.

I've not blown it to pieces yet but it's whinning, since changing the gearbox oil the clutch is slipping so the seals have probably gone, and it really does make some nasty noises in first and was jolting earlier as if i was kangarooing it!

Doubt i'll sell it after doing all this work!

They're ok if you drive them easy, but if you give them stick, they seem to turn into candyfloss.

you can pick up a 2nd hand box for £150-£200 and get it fitted by a friendly mechanic for £100 or less.

2nd hand box with like sub 30,000 miles.

I bought a 14,000 mile gearbox for only £180.

I've also got a spare in my garage incase I need it in the future

Why do you need a new clutch? - Valeo is best clutch to get and that'll be about £60 - £70 online..

So £150 + £70 + £100 fitting = £330-£350 max.

Would be easier for you to look on ebay / Saxo Sports Club / PGAC / Rallye Register / French Sports Club / Sax Perience etc...

Saxo VTS / 106 Gti boxes are the same.

VTR boxes are longer (shit)...

XSi boxes are closer, as are rallye boxes (probably also shit for everyday).

I'd sell you my spare, but I can't guarentee the internals condition... The guy who sold it to me was a cunt and gave me a box which couldn't be mounted to my car!

I was forced to buy a recon box for a lot of money (ripped off) and that is now on my car.

Since then the spare box has been fixed to fit a 106 gti (as one of the mounting points was damaged before), but obviously I've not fitted it. The bloke ensures me it was 23k and mint condition, but who knows lol.

I guess I'll find out when I need to swap the boxes over.

Although it is tempting when I've seen a gearbox with Quaife Diff for sale for about £560 to sell my box for £200 and thus it'd only be another £360 to get the quaife box

What actually goes on them? Can you not get parts to replace them?

to take the box apart or get someone else to do it will cost you more than a 2nd hand box.

plus parts for internally NEW are expensive.

A NEW gearbox from pug is more than a NEW engine.

Gearbox = £1500, engine is around £1100.

there is one bearing in that box that regularly fails lets face it its only an 1100 metro gearbox.

You could have a set of bearing in the box with a new clutch fitted for £500 better than a secondhand box!
