What tests are there to determine which it maybe other then a wet and dry compression test?
I think it maybe my piston rings as it smokes when you first start it up badly (indicating oil seeping through when not in use and then been burnt off) it is then not smokey once warm unless you take it past about 4.5k

Might be valve stem seals because as it sits over night, oil seats and goes past the valve stem seals, Hence why it smokes on start up.

post the results up, compared to my oil burner gsi, which the oil rings were knackered

Compression test wont be effected by valve stem seals.
If wet/dry compression tests gives similar results, its problem the stem seals.

that tapping noise mate is your TAPPETS!!! its just where they have no OIL reaching them! I have that same problem as well buddy on mine... I used a bit of OIL ADDITIVE and that has seemed to work..... for the moment

Here are the results i got on the compression test, not sure how accurate they are as they seem a bit random
My gsi
Dry 1 2 3 4
240 235 185 240
wet 275 260 270 265
Warrens gsi with piston rings gone
dry 1 2 3 4
210 220 225 210
wet 225 225 250 230
When this test is done is there a set amount of oil that should be added and how long should it be left before taking a wet reading?

Is that the same as the test above?
Also the head that is on the car at the moment is the ported and polished one i got from you. Did that have new stem seals in it?

well was my £12 halfords gauge!!
but on my car, the compressions were correct (190psi 1&2 and 200psi 3&4)
but on my gsi and gavins they seem high to me
on the wet compression test it was two squirts of oil in each cylinder
but yes, did seem all over the place

Leak down test is different.
It holds the pressure in, and shows how much is leaking past valves/rings.

no point in doing that, theres no leak, as you can see compressions good???

Apart from cylinder 3 having a 3bar pressure difference to the others?
And its closer with a wet test, sounds like worn rings on 3.

but if the oil ring was worn (causing oil burning) surely the wet test wont go up that high???? its strange how low compared to the others it was, and how much it went up on a wet test
dont the compressions seem high to you? as my 1.4 was reading 190/200psi on the compression test, and i though the 1.6 was the same compression ratio

The reading would go up as the oil you put into the cylinder temporarily creates a better seal, hence the higher reading.
Ive never run a compression test on one of these engines, so dont know whats considered normal.
Did you do the test at WOT? I assume so by the readings.

nope, didnt touch the throttle!
first time iv actual done a wet test, so just put two (well not very accurate) squirts of oil in each cylinder
but even the dry compression results seem high to me! as im sure standard is suppost to be 200psi
yes but the amount it went up by, was hell of alot!

Ideally the test needs be done with all 4 plugs out, and the throttle wide open.

would be interesting to see if it made a difference by leaving the oil in there a little while and then taking a reading. As that would give it more time to leak through.

well all four plugs were out, and dis pack unplugged!!!!!
but tbh i never have the throttle open when i do compression tests at work either
