Thought it should be in General chat as its a general question.  Any way, one of my mates has on on his 400bhp R32 GTS. It sounds the absolute bo**ocks! What exactly are they? How do they work? Why have one? Also a Cossie ive seen has one, and the noise is amazing

Vent from an external wastegate into the atmosphere. Very illegal too.

Guy in my village had a R5GTT tuned to the tits, had a screamer pipe. So fucking loud, sounded superb

Its dumping exhaust gas with no cat and no silencers so it makes a hell of a noise.
Without the screamer pipe your wastegate may be dumping hot exhaust gas on bits of engine that don't like heat

Exhaust systems need to be silenced by law. At least 1 silencer somewhere in the system.
Screamer pipe has no silencer

God im retarded. Ok, im sure my mate bought an external wastegate for his car though, and it sat on top of the turbo, next to the Manifold. Not anywhere near the downpipe
