My Dad has had three 306s, one after another. 2 diesels and a 1.4 petrol. Were good little cars. He only does 10k every 3 years or so and then gets shut. His cars are always brand new and on order. He's never had any problems with Peugeot or Citrorens. Both diesels were the 1.9 Turbo version. He's still a fan and got me Mum a 307 2.0 HDI Also got a Picasso.
Gearboxs go easy in French cars from my experience. If you can pick a 306 with a new box put in you'll be laughing for 60k at least.
I'd have another Peugeot all day long, i just think new ones are overpriced and don't have as much money as my Dad

The DT/Dturbos will be mechanical injection (no ECU) and the HDi is electronic injection. The HDi is the preferable choice, as it's quicker, quieter, and newer.

No. My 306 DT is on 135k on it's original gearbox and it's still fine.

my 306dt is on 181k on its original box
306 is cheap to buy
cheap to insure
cheap for parts
pretty reliable
have their faults as any car does.
if ur looking at any, check the lights on alarm, windows etc work ok, basically all switchs work on door, will be broken wires in loom, pain in the arse to repair
check heater works, if not heater matrix will be on its way out, dash out job

I love my Vaux Col and I'd usually say Vectra but I'd agree with StevieXE ancd say 306td. They are cheapo to run and maintain and can last for ages if you semi look after it with the old regular oil change etc.

That golf's £900 over your upper limit - make your mind up! .
As regards the Pug - you need to be searching for a 2.0 HDi D Turbo 3dr- that's the one that looks like the GTi .
