I'm probably opening up a can of worms here, but apparently you can now be charged with not being in control of your vehicle if the police see you smoking whilst driving. Next they'll be banning people from listening to the radio in their cars cause you take your hand of the wheel to change station. really fucking annoys me this type of thing.

please dont turn this into a discussion about the negative aspects of smoking.

To be honest, driving will never be the same with all these laws that are coming in.

Personally im not a smoker, but have friends that are, and they are blatently in control with a cig in their hand and driving at the same time.

I can understand the phone laws though, but this one boggles me.

surely we will then need some laws for putting our windiws up/down, gear changes, or pretty much anything else where we need to take our hands off the steering wheel for a couple of seconds?

I agree with this to be honest. I've seen numerous people clambering about whilst driving, finding a fag, finding a lighter and sparking up whilst driving. This is just as dangerous as holding a phone to your ear imho.

I'm not a smoker and hate smoking so I'm going to be biased towards it. Actually smoking and driving isn't the problem. It is the sparking up which annoys me.

TBH smoking can be both perfectly fine when driving and extremely bad.

If all goes fine its no different than opening a windown, messing with radio, etc. which can normally be done perfectly safely.

But smoking also offers the problem of if you drop it then you cant just leave it be. You've got to mess about finding it, and if you drop it on your person then you'll have an automatic reaction that could be very very dangerous to other road users.

There's a fine art which i've mastered so you can reach a cig and light it without taking your eyes off the road once

If you drop the cigarette between your legs you wont be in control will you.

I friend of mine 50yr old got pulled about 2yrs ago for taking a drink from a bottle of water while driving for the police saying they didnt believe she had full control of the car.

I've got it down to a fine art of taking my phone out my pocket and answering, and holding the phone against my ear with my shoulder. That is illegal though.

its not banned but they can charge you for not being in control. its not gonna be the case where they automatically pull you over if they see you smoking.

Well you have to take your hand off the wheel every time you want a puff, possibilty of dropping it, trying to light it etc. But personally I don't agree with the phone ban, but if your banning one the other should be too.

cant compare how you hold a steering wheel to banning smoking. I agree with the smoking ban good if you ask me.

P.S - Did you know smoking is bad for you? it can give you lung cancer and stains your hands/teeth. Makes your clothes smell aswell as being expensive!
