Is the emergence of this technology impacting on the price of lcd's? They seemed to have come down a fair whack within the space of a month.
You can now buy a 37" LG from Currys for £499 now!

na think thats just general manufacturing prices creeping down and lots more competitors coming into the market, as happens with most new peoducts.
product life cycle ect.

That's still 3.5 years continuous operation (7 years if you watch 12 hours a day), and more than the lifespan of a typical plasma IIRC.
The contrast ratio is unbelivably awesome too (million to one etc) so finalyl blacks will actually look black (without putting a stupid glossy film over the panel).

tbh it seems strange they are bringing it to market so soon, especially considering the (sort of) recent introduction of both standard plasma and LCD and the huge pricetag and small size factor of the OLED.

How does a new display technology relate to proprietary formats such as UMD, etc?
The contrast ratio blows plasma/LCD out the water, they can make flexible screens as there's no backlight, etc (search YouTube for a cool lab demo).
Apparently quite a few mobile phones already used OLED technology to enhance battery life. It's just difficult to make large displays as with all new techologies.

This is innovation, not a new media format. The first LCD TV's were pretty shite and they were also pretty small... Give it a few years

^^ I agree with all that. Just confuses me at to why they have decided to bring it to market when 99% of people out there wont go out and spend £850 on an 11" screen

The problem is, Sony brining the product to market first will mean they beat Samsung, but then Samsung are more likely to bring out a better product when they come to market.

That's ok -- then we can all continue to be Samsung 'whores' as usual
