cambelt funnily is recommended by vw every 4 years. or 120000 miles..

listen for knockingover bumps = antiroll bar and bushes

make sure it doesnt over heat, and warms up in a decent amount of time. VW still insist on making waterpumps with plastic impellers that fall off

Common engine faults include:
Coil packs fook up
Air mass meters go funny and cause a lack of power
coolant temp sensors
Sometimes we se a fault caused by the throttle body and have to replace that along with the MAP sensor (charge pressure drop iirc)

Make sure the brake fluids been renewed every 2 years

Aircon is supposed to be serviced every 2 years

Spark plugs every 4 years or 40000 miles
air filter the same

pollen filter every 20k or two years

oil and filter every year or 10k

and the usual stuff - actually check for rust - its a common mis conception that volkswagens dont rust... they do, just as much as any other car

The 2 people i've known with mk4's in the past have had the exact same problem with them. The electrics seemed a bit dodgy i.e. the windows would come down themselves and a couple of times they've went out to the car in the morning and all the windows have been at random positions. Not the best for security.

I don't know if that's coincidence or it's a common problem.

Throttle bodies can become covered in gunk.
look out for oil leaks as the sump sits low and can get caught and crack.

also like broster said check the windows, as the clips are prone to breaking causing the window to drop VW realised this and you can buy a replacement kit from them.

the 1.8 T have a belt and a tensioner which are normally replaced at the same time

Early models have coil pack problems

mafs tend to be ok unless you use oiled induction kits etc

Plastic impeller water pumps is a comm,on fault- when changign the cam belt get this chanegd also

Haldex oil needs replacing every 20k if its the 4wd version

Service is via AVS but Iwould stick to set intervals and use normal oil rather than the 11 quid a litre jobbie

Themostats are also a common issue on these engines

Incidently there are a number of new cases arsing with regards to cam belts sanpping at 80k. original TT manual stated every 115k now its changed to 60k or 5 years which ever comes first

anti roll bars need to be checked
