Author 2002 corsa failed MOT for wrong number plates......

......we have a 2002 (52 reg) corsa

It has private plate L17LHH

It failed it's MOT as the numberplates did not say the name of the people who made them and postcode

I know newly made plates HAVE to have this info, but is it an MOT requirement?

Also, how can old plates now have to be replaced? Some cars have plates made in 1990s and thye pass OK?

Will be going down later to complain

No idea.

My plates are from FancyPlates.co.uk which are road legal in terms of reflectiveness, but don't have a brand (i.e. FancyPlates) or post code on them.

They passed no problem.

You'll probably find it's a legal requirement. Some are just stricter than others, and will be a way of getting more money out of you for a retest, or new set of plates.

If it is any conciliation, Halfords plates are pretty much plain. The logo is invisible and the post code is tiny

They need a BSAU mark and the postcode to pass an MOT, yes.
No idea why, can't see what difference the postcode makes, I understand the BSAU mark.

Ok, law states that plates after 31/08/2001 need the BSU, name and postcode

the car was registered 2002 BUT the plates were made before 2001

I am arguing my case

I think he is being very picky. Car is 100% standard and perfect

If the car is made after after the deadline, the plates should be too, as the standard ones from Vauxhall would have been.

If you go and buy a private plate which is like "33 EJB" you can't put the original metal, black and silver plates on your 2002 car.

It failed, get new plates, get certificate.

The 2 statement are:


Vehicles constructed before 1.1.1973 may display traditional style “black and white” plates i.e. white, silver or grey characters on a black plate

and

All number plates made after 31.8.2001 must display the mandatory typeface. Number plates made prior to this date
must be substantially the same. An example of the typeface is shown below.

you are wrong mate, it must have a post code to show the police where they were made as technically your supposed to get the v5 and what not before you make a customer plates and it should all go on the computer database although no-one bothers. thats why the post code is there, regardless when the plate was made, it is a 2002 car it needs to go by 2002's law on plates. you cant get away with sticking the old fashioned black plates on a new car, this is exactly the same. sorry to burst your bubble.

i've never had bsau marks/postcodes on mines and it passed though.

Prove when the plates were made. Plus, with things like this it goes on when the vehicle was first registered not on anything else. Otherwise you could do all sorts of things.

i made my plates myself at work to learn how to use the machine and they dont have our logo on, my car is 1996 though so is it likely to fail?
