You could pick up a 1.5TD or 1.4 sri with some miles on it for that.

personally i would go for the 12v as it will be slightly faster, newer, lower millage, less rusty, better spec .

No No No No No No No No No No No No No No etc etc etc

Dont buy a 1.2 8v whatever you do !!

I promise you that you'll regret it !

like corsa_nation said you could find a 1.4sri for that much, and could still be an awesome project..

Just whatever you do, dont get a 1.2 8v !!

If you could find a 1.2 16v then i'd go for it ! But if you have a strict budget, a 1.0 12v would be your best bet.

I thought mine was ok TBH, very very under powered but cummon, their not that much slower than a 12 volt

no denying the 12v will be twice as unreliable

mine was on 27k and i replaced the air flow sensor 4 or 5 times, idle valve a few times and some other stuff. also had an annoying rattle for months which i discovered to be the plastic cover on the engine rocker cover thingy

I'd go for a 1.2 8v over a 1.0 12v for a first car, 12vs arent' as reliable, too many sensors, timing chains can snap, and they vibrate like buggery
