How do people rate these? I suggested to my brother he shouldnt knock the idea while he doesnt have kids lol, I hear mixed reviews but on paper they dont seem terrible and I imagine the driving position is somewhat elise-ish. Im looking for a car I could do some miles round Europe in maybe next year and can't see myself going in the Rallye and thought they could be fun? Im thinking mk2 over mk1. There is always that JAP factor though Thoughts?

If I've heard them criticised it's because of the practical aspects rather than the drive.

I had an MR2 GT-S Turbo T bar. Tuned to 293 bhp @ hubs.

Very fast

T bar was cool in summer but leaked a bit when it rained. 2 seater with minimal space, but you never buy an MR2 for practicality do you?

had a jap import gt turbo model.

Abit hair raising driving on the limit in the dry and lethal in the wet.

wouldnt fancy having a crash in one.

quite fast with a stage 1 power conversion.

coolent pipes that run the length of the car corroded 660 quid to fix. power steering failed as did the starter motor

Great idea but for one thing ?? take it you dont plan to take any luggage - travelling light ??!!


joking apart its always a car I have wanted myself, unfortunatly a wife and 10 year old has put paid to that !!!!!!!!!!!

Unless its the turbo'd version, I wouldn't bother. Not very fast at all.

I had a GTS turbo, 280bhp

best car ive owned, so comfy, nice drive, just dont put ya foot down into/out of bends etc, its pretty lethal.

Sold it to a mate, who let his missus drive it, did a 720 into inside + outside crash barriers. Wrote it off

From my ownership I took that : they can be a bit unpradictable in the wet, if it snows your walking to work! T-bar is utter useless & rather annoying - get a tin top coupe - Other than that there good cars.

mine was just a 2L 16v GT



It was ok, I was 19 & couldnt insure the turbo But if your getting one deffo turbo tin top

Why are they that bad? I mean it the short wheel base? Can't be worse than an elise and they are great fun.

Butler I would never dismiss the NA version they are entertaining to drive and very good value for money and have excellent reliability.

A friend of mine and Jr's has one and when he took it out on track jr described it as a "weapon".

I'd recomend one if your on a budget and definately a good introduction to the world of rear wheel drive

I've driven a n/a MR2 before and my dads old Cav redtop was much faster and that ain't nothing special. Plus, its common knowledge that n/a MR2's ain't that fast for what they are as standard.

MR2 (Rev3) Has 27 bhp more than the cav & is RWD..................should be as fast & special (fun?) if you know what your doing with it. It takes a bit of skill to be confident to drive one on its limit especially in the wet!

Nah they are good fun m8 defo a car to own but not for the inexperienced driver with all the weight and power at the back!

IIRC the power steering deactivates automaticaly over a certain MPH can anyone confirm!?

Mine didnt but then it wasnt an import!! It had some gadgets missing as per........

Very nice cars, common fault is they rot underneath before you see any visual rust but they are spot on cars from what iv seen of 2 of my mates turbo versions
