Right, to cut a very long story short, a friend of mine was stopped in his fiesta, told to remove his exhaust (Ashley cat back system) as it was "Illegal to modify the exhaust system in any way, according to the police.

There was no noise test or anything, just told to remove it, with a ticket thing issued for the removal.

He never removed it, and they've been at him ever since, and today took the biscuit at work, they were at his car measuring his exhaust

Its not even that loud tbh, theres people going around with much louder cars, yet they only stop one guy?

Oh, and they are defiantly harassing him, they have stopped him and searched the car for drugs ever since the exhaust thing started, even though the guy doesnt do drugs, or would ever have them in his car.

Oh, the joys of rural police forces, fuck all to do so they harrass the young'uns

Attempted murder when they try to remove my exhaust?

.......even though i dont have a car atm

Oh, and if its illegal to modify the exhaust in any way, how come so many companies specialise in making custom exhausts etc? They must all be illegal, and committing a crime fitting the exhausts?

performance exhauist wouldn't be illegal for use on the track, or show use so they can sell them, if they was illegal

Ahhh, true.

I always though it was legal to change the exhaust however you liked it, so long as the emissions and noise was within limits.

Just the police being akward bastards again.

It'd be a logistical nightmare to enforce, they'd need to know the decibel ratings for each car from the factory.

Obviously if it's stupidly loud, then it's obvious, but even non genuine 'standard' replacements sound different, so they're technically illegal, if any 'modified' exhaust is illegal.

Its really not, its quite quiet, they haven't stopped a lad running around his micra with a straight through exhaust, or a guy with a 2.0 corsa with a straight through, both are ridiculously loud.

I think its more to do with the fact that the police dont like the guy

If insurance company is informed its totally legal providing the system has at least 1 silencer.

FACT

I'd love the police to pull me for this, seeing as i work in a garage where we do MOT tests

Not fact. The amount of silencers isn't relevant, it's the noise, and there's no official db limit for that, it's down to the MOT tester/police officer's discretion.

"b. a silencer in such a condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition"

http://www.ukmot.com/6-3.asp#Text_top

Even with a silencer, it could fail for being too loud if the tester thought it was.

i also thought this and had an agrument with a police man about it.they told me things can still pass on an mot but will still be illegal in the eyes of the law.but then other have told me as long as it's not too loud, not sticking out too far it and the emissions are ok theres nothing they can do

MOT is different from the law.

It is illegal to moddify an exhaust from standard manufacturer design. (wait till I'm finished).

This however was introduced to stop people putting a broom handle up the exhaust and bursting the baffles giving a straight through pipe
(this was popular in the 70's)

The law does not stop you from changing the exhaust to the design of another manufacturer (i.e aftermarket) providing it does not get moddified. by removing, inserting etc..

TO be honest I cant see him getting charged with anything, maybe give Ashley a ring and see what they say about the legalaity of their exhausts then pass that info on to the police?

Thats strange I just got my papers through for mine

Was tested in my Astra several months ago, they have changed the wording in the charge

I'm still pleading not guilty on the grounds that they dont have a calibrated rev counter, or a testing proceadure they just do what the 2 cops want to do at the time
