Nikon D40 @ Jessops
What are peoples opinions on this ?
I've only every used compact digital cameras but want to move up and want a good starting DSLR.
Reviews on this are good as far as I can see.
Anyone got one?
Cheers

Other SLRs you might want to look at as a beginner are:
Canon 350D
Nikon D70s

Well, i began using a D70s and that was awesome. Got some good shots with that and learnt quite a bit. I've never used the 350D but i think Hoddo has one so maybe he could give you his opinion on that.

No not at all. I recently was flicking through a photograp magazine and it gave the D40x (updated version of the D40) 4 stars as a beginners camera. I'll try get the article up on here for you tomorrow mate.

i started on a D50 and im still on it after like a year and a half or something.
true im waiting till my uni course starts so i can get ridiculous amounts of discount but hey.
d40/50/70's are ideal to use as theyre user friendly and simple when learnt.

Ive recently bought a 400d after stepping up from a point and shoot. I've found it very easy to get to grips with and found a handy guide on the net about all the individual settings. Only thing that lets the 400d down is the 10second, non adjustable self timer

I have a Nikon D40 and it's a fantastic camera. I looked at the Canon 400d but it felt awkard to hold.
It's all about the lenses.
The only down side with the D40 is that it has no Autofocus motor in the body, so the Nikon Prime lenses have to be manually focused which isn't ideal. High ISO performance is excellent and the kit 18-55 lens is far superior to that supplied with the Canon 400D.

i'm having this struggle at the moment also. i am looking at the canon eos 400d and the nikon d40.
they seem pretty similar in spec and they both score highly in reviews. guy in the local shop told me they are the 2 best cameras for entry level users.
mate of mine said go for nikon but only because he's always had nikon's. i prefer the look of the canon personally.
i'm gonna just pick one and be done with it as the decision is too difficult!

Canon FTW JJ
I would not go to jessops though, i found a nice little camera shop and they did me a deal on my camera so it was cheeper than anywere i had seen and they are all photographers not random kids with a weekend job.

thats the main problem with jessops and the like. the staff just memorise the brochure. they rarely have a clue about anything you ask them.

They'll always edge towards Canon goods aswell as their cut is greater.

Yeah I have the 350D as Jonny said, though I don't think they make them any more. for what its worth you might as well get a 400D you get higher resolution images as its 10mp rather than 8mp.
@ Rob E That seems to be the problem with the 350D as well, but I bought a switch for it so I control it like that.
