i know The Register had it up that an insider said theres a big possibilty that Toshiba will be shutting down production in a few weeks, but Toshiba are apparently denying it.

Microsoft do not support hd-dvd at all, they just happened to bring out a drive for the xbox.

Steve as we have already told you, until you can download and store 30 gig in a couple of minutes there has to be some sort of physical media, blu ray will be about for a while yet.

i dont think its anything really, i dont think blu ray will sell either, general non geeky people just dont care enough about having a slight improvement in quality, over a normal upscaled dvd to warrant its purchase, both hardware and the increased cost of the movies on disk
i am one of them, hence i dont own either to this day

To be honest, as steve says... currently the market DOESN'T need hd player / blu ray...
DVD's are adequate quality and not everyone has a HD tv to notice the difference.
I think Recordable HD DVD's may of been a good thing, as you could've got an amazing amount of data on them. But bit of a gimmick... Loads of people who had ps3's go 'Well, I've got a blue ray player with it' but then they don't buy any blue ray discs  waste of time.

You get recordable blu-ray and they fit more on them than hd-dvd did, dvd's are not adequate quality if you have anything more than an old crt.
The current market is all about lcd's and plasmas, nearly everybody has one, and you need a high def player to get that resolution, an upscaled dvd isn't the same.

have you played an ordinary dvd on a hd tv using an upscaling dvd player? more then adequate, coupled with the fact dvds have a higher res then SD by default anyway

My ps3 also upscales steve, as does my dvd player downstairs, not as good, they are generating information thats not there.
Dvd's are 768x520 iirc, thats widescreen sd resolution.

You argued the point about hd-dvd being better about a year ago, i'm saying that blu-ray will have plenty of life for at least a few years, we'll see who's correct this time a year or 2 down the line.
I expect to again be saying you're lucky search doesn't work.

blu ray may stick around for a bit, but it wont sell in its millions like dvd did when it took over from vhs.
Its a stop gap for something else, more revolutionary to take over

Im a massive movie fan, have a 50" plasma tv, got the hd dvd player cos it was on offer when i got my 360. Hd dvd/blu ray prices are cheaper than dvds when they originaly came out so i wouldnt say price is much of an issue?!
no way of making my hd player play blu ray?

yeah it will sell to people like you, hardcore movie fans, or hardware geeks, but it wont sell to EVERYONE like dvd did

Yes it will, the ps3 will help it along the same as the ps2 did for dvd, don't let the fact you bought the lesser console cloud your vision in regards to blu-ray, it's not a sony only venture.

Seeing how rapidly blu ray has grown, far more than dvd did (i worked for mvc when they launched) id say that blu ray will be around for a long time tbh
