Right, I live at uni most of the time, so I have 2mb internet in our house there...
Anyway, at my parents home they only had 1mb which was with BT, and it felt slow enough. I kept telling to threaten to cancel and get bt to upgrade them to the faster service for the same price.
Anyway, instead they've switched to 'Talk Talk' as they already had their phone service with this. So I thought 'hmm... ok, whats the speed of talk talk' - looked on talktalk's site and it said the usual 'up to 8mb'.
Cool I thought, afterall their current 1mb (downloads about 114kb/s) felt slow enough! ... I obviously didn't expect to get full 8mb, but at worst what we were currently getting and hopefully more like 2mb - 3mb ish...
Anyway, they told me to come home and set it up for them as it's switched over, just got it all working and connected... thought lets do a speed test.
WTF? that's like 65kb/s shite... and the uploads unusually high, higher than 256k upload ...
Anyone else on talk talk? I can't live with only 65k/s download! that's almost as bad as dial up. I find my uni house 2mb feels slow!

the reason bt gave you 1mb was probably because they tested the line at that speed, i suspect you live far away from the exchange

no the reason bt gave us 1mb, was because when we signed up for bt, it was originally 512k service... Then when they upgraded the default connection level to 1mb, they gave us a free upgrade. My parents were paying proper low $ for it. They just use the net to look up crap. But ask me to download things for them, which obviously requires a heftier conneciton.

That makes no sense... previously I could get 114 k/s on a 1mb agreed connection... now I'm on talk talk up to 8mb, I can only get 65k/s
If the line was shit. I wouldn't of got 114k/s ...
and BT test says I can get 2mb.

theoretically yes, that doesnt take into account the quality of the main line in your house

Yes, but if the quality of the line going into my house was giving us 114k/s only the other day... then why now would it only be capable of 65k/s.
Does talk talk throttle the connection back during peak daytime hours or something?

talktalk are pretty poor and theres plenty of reviews around with people complaining about their service. I would have checked www.thinkbroadband.com before i signed up.
If you're still within your "money back" period then i would cancel and go with someone else

it's not my connection it's my parents, and they 'say' they don't give a shit about downloads... despite them constantly going 'oh can you download me, x , y , z' ...
strangely, just rebooted the router and it's now connected at 1mb ish.

Think I'm gonna keep rebooting the router... just did it again and now up to 1.3 mb.

Currently...
Will try rebooting it a few times... the latency feels good tho, it's literally responding instantly, like on those speed tests 39ms ping!
also good to have more upload than before.

If you've changed over to talk talk your line will now be most likely plugged into their dslam, or even if not will still be doing DLM (Dynamic Line Management) for at least the next 10 days, meaning that the speeds will fluctuate.
If its over about a month there may be another issue.

Most definitely DLM then.
Its just adjusts over the 10 days until it finds a stable speed.

The lines in our area are pretty shabby tbh Paul. They seem a bit reluctant to upgrade any of it.

I paid them £200 to plug a cable in to the telephone box in the car park of my flat that took the engineer 11 seconds. Nice.
I dread to think what they charge for real work.
