Pay As You Drive
My renewal for LN5 crime area and car 1.8Si Escort with me being 20 (3NCB) and GF 19 FC was going to be £517 with legal cover with excesses of £320 + £250 young driver.
Nice bloke called Dave ( ) gave me a quote for PAYD for 6000 miles (which is more than what I will actually be doing) and all in including courtesy car, fitting blackbox which also acts as a tracker for breakdown or stolen vehicle and legal expenses and excesses of £220 + £250 young driver came to £355!
2p per mile (doesnt matter where) 6am - 11pm, get hit hard 11pm - 6am at £1 per mile, but as I never drive then anyway doesnt matter
Quite pleased with that, will be talking it over and taking a decision, just thought I would post my initial experience for other young members on this forum, so far Norwich Union have been good

So do you pay that upfront or do you get a bill at the end of every month like with a mobile phone that tells you how much you owe for that month depending how much you've used it?

If after the first year of PAYD you end up paying MORE than a standard annual premium, they will refund the difference.
They did when I looked into it anyway.

Why does it cost less per mile in the busier times of the day when there are more cars on the road so a higher likelyhood of being involved in accident? Bit Irish...

Its £17.64 a month flat charge
First 100 off peak miles free (off peak being 6am - 11pm) a month
Off peak miles 2p a mile after your 100 free ones
Peak miles admittedly expensive at £1 per mile but if you dont drive then it doesnt matter
I asked about the obligatory 'does it monitor your speed?'. The guy said if we did that and passed it on we would soon lose our customer base. They monitor it only for use in coordination with an ongoing police investigation, they dont hand it over willingly.

i can see them taking your speed into account no matter what. like, if your driving over the speed limit all the time you're an increased risk to them so your premium would go up?
i think it's stupid having it like a phone bill to be honest

That sounds shite to me. Probably half my driving is me heading to somewhere before say 9pm, then half of my driving is me coming home again after 11pm. It would bankrupt me. This only sounds suitable for people like my dad who get scared of leaving the house after dusk.

I'm confused here - you say it's a pay as you drive scheme, but you're limited to 6000 miles!?!
Was your original quote for 6000 miles? If you did the whole 6000 PAYG miles off-peak, it's still cost you £471 for the year! For the £46, i'd pay the higher premium, and not have to worry about doing less than 46 miles after 11pm in 12 months to break even!

Well it makes sense to me tbh.
I dont drive after 11pm, I dont have any emergencies to attend to as I'm a student 
I dont speed anywhere and nor does my girlfriend, so why is speed monitoring a problem?
Im not limited to 6000 miles at all, if I did go over 6000 miles you simply pay the 2p a mile / £1 a mile depending on when you drive. The £17.xx is simply the basic cost. If they saw you were half way through your policy and had already done 15000 miles they might ring and ask you to reconsider your option (which you can always change back to a standard policy whenever you want)

Well granted we all stray over the limit at one point in time or another, but 'opens can of worms' Im talking about a few mph over, not 1.5/2x limits

so after the first 100 miles you pay 2p a mile a month and your doing 6000 miles a year so 500 a month which leaves 400miles of them at 2 p a mile = £8 ontop of the £17?

Driving at night is so much better. There is no one on the roads. I drive at what i feel safe at knowing that there is a very very low chance that there is someone walking the streets and almost no chance that there will be anyone under 18 out.
To put things into perspective, from Calis to Disney land Paris i averaged 80 mph. Thats including stopping for fuel and bathroom break and stopping for toll booths. Empty dual carrage ways FTW!!!
