I was going to get an 08 plate Vectra, worked out at £16000 from a taxi finance company, talked myself out of it due to this fact. Got a 53 reg Mondeo instead. Fuck buying a new car with that depreciation!

Depends what car you buy, how much you buy it for and how much you sell it for.

I bought my cooper s for 14800 and sold it for 10000 -- 3 years of motoring and 50000 miles.

Thats not bad imo -- remeber during that time you save the money you would have spent on parts, servicing and mot ona 2nd hand car.

The other point as well is that if you have a decent newish car to part exchange then you will normally get a much better deal on a new car- because the dealership factors in the money they will make selling your old car as well.

I like the fact that with a new car you get hassle three motoring during the 3 year warrante period- no mot for a while, unlikely to have to replace tyres brakes ect for a good few miles...... works well for me anyway... the depreciation hasnt been too bad for me up to now.

The other point is this ....

I paid 14800 for my cooper -- then got 10k of that back off renault against the clio, and got a 2k reduction on the clio because they wanted my cooper s.

The person that bought my cooper s with 45000 miles on it paid 11k -- three years down the line that car will be worth under 4k -- so they have not got enough equity there to buy another nice car for 10 k.

Where as I will sell my clio in a couple of years and still have a nice chunk of money to put towards a new car again .. I also know it is going to cost me nothing except for servicing during this period.

What Im basically saying is that if you buy a new car at the right price then you will always have the oportunity to buy another new car- and just factor the difference into a 0% payment scheme -- this is affordable to me because my new car under warrante is costing no where near as much as my old corsa was to keep on the road.

Pro's & cons for buying brand new. I think if you can easy afford it you shouldnt worry about it. Like Dr P says you can loose as much on a 2nd hand car as you can a new one(taking everything into account). Its all about buying the right car from the right place for the right price, bit of homework & you shouldnt lose out too badly.

Different cars suits different peoples taste's & situatons.

I'd never buy a brand new car, you lose a few k just driving it off the forecourt.

Im not convinced entirely with the new cars drop like a lead balloon stigma surrounding them. For example - My old man bought a brand new A4 2yrs ago for just over £23k, now similar used 06 plate cars with a similar spec & mileage on AT are selling for £19500-20500, trade in value of £18400. Thats not all bad. He was looking at a a used one at the same time it was 05 plate around 20k, old model tho, so now it would be the old old model now. Value - £14400 px. Add the cost of MOT's, possible repairs onto that & your worse off & driving an older car.

Obviously im sure this isnt true of all marques. But if you the right car in the 1st place & you wont loose too much on it!

A4 2L tdi S-line Avant

Original Price £23,912
Franchised Dealer £21,225
Independent Dealer £20,465
Private Good £19,710
Private Poor £17,055
Part Exchange £18,380

£5k or so loss in 2yrs, £2500 a year for a brand new car, under warranty, no MOT's or shit to worry about - thats fecking good. Try saying that if you buy a Mondeo, Veccy brand new!!

Heres the flipside, This was the Audi's competition when he was buying :-

Ford Mondeo Hatchback (00-07) 2.2TDCi ST (155ps) 5d (05) Change
2006/06 Change
Average mileage: 10,000 miles Change

Original Price £22,582
Franchised Dealer £14,390
Independent Dealer £13,750
Private Good £13,105
Private Poor £11,310
Part Exchange £12,205

Say no more!

I think more people should buy more new cars! Less wanky cars on the road looks cool, they are better to drive into other people, and i get a better choice for my next car!

i see your point its very positive set of figure for the Audi but i havent spent £5000 in two years on servicing, insurance or MOT!!
Against the Mondeo though the Audi is hard to turn down!

I bet if you add up everything you spend including depreciation its more than you'd think, even if its only half the 2.5k so what - happy days, your compairing a corsa B to a brand new audi....cost wise. All hes had to replace is 2 front tyres!

Point of the story is 2500/yr depreciation is fantastic - 20% loss over 2 years thats half of what the PH article states as average, hes going to trade it in in October for another for another one hes that impressed!
