Pros and cons of both people? im swaying towards powder coat as i need the paint to last and not chip with the milege im doing, but im not very up on it. Can you get any colour in powder coat ie, metalics

Excuse my ignorance im just after any help as i know very little about the process and what options are option to me

powder coating is harder wearing and you can get it in loads of colours and in metallic.

u can powdercoat in loads of colours, flat,metalic and pearls

ive always had wheels powdercoated cause they are alot harder wearing and more resistant to stone chips

this is what im after as im driving a basic 420 miles a week. do you pay more for metalics and pearls? i think i may try and find a site i can read up about it

You will normally pay more for anything other than a base colour

hmm how much does it cost to have 4 wheels powdercoated.... out of interest. and should they be shot blasted first? heard something about that....

Im trying to weigh it up you see, as i dont want to do throwing money at the car as its basically my workhorse but also im after long lasting.

Usually £40-50 a rim where i had mine done

light anthracite never really looked into a flat colour but i prefer my metalics in paint

my bbs' was shot blasted and powdercoated in "road traffic gloss white" for £210 all in inc VAT

Where i had mine done quoted me £60 a rim for metallic.....

so i went for gloss black which at the time cost £40 a rim. i believe they charge £50 now though

I dont mind paying around £200 as im gonna be paying £160 to be painted

Whats with the road traffic gloss white??? do you not pick from car colours??

Standard manufacturer wheels are painted, so stick with paint IMO.

You cant properly touch up powdercoat,
I have found it goes dull if not thouroughly looked after,
as its a plastic hot brake dust can embed itself and is highly noticeable on white powdercoat.
Colours can be limited, although there is now a fair range available.

And with paint, you tend to get a really shiny finish, you can protect it easily with a good wax, if you do need to touch it up, you can do easily, if you did want to re paint the alloys you can just sand them down (you would need to get powdercoat removed by bead blasting)

So a proper good quality paint finish with plenty of laquer is best IMO

you dont really need to touch up powder coat unless you drive down curbs.

Paint isnt hard wearing and will chip easier. my mrs has had her pro race 1.2s for 2 months and has got stone chips on them. my wheels have seen more mile more abuse and still look as good as they did when i had then done.

paint will always be softer and more prone to chips

^^ i agree with will

i had my vts wheels powder coated, once you get a chip the entire wheel coat starts to flake, (in english) its like a skin, very hard to brake, but once broke ur bugger'd.

paint on the otherhand can be touched up easily (and cheaper) and 3/4 coats of laquer they'll shine like a mofo

Hmm, threw up some very good points their. i may just say to my bodyshop guy, pleny of coats of laquar! hes renouwned for his shiny finishes



if they go to him they will more then likely go thic colour

there is a wide range of colours but there not specific to any car paint tbh. road traffic white was the nearest to glacier white

i usually charge £40 for gloss black/white blasted and coated

had my wheels coated for at least 2 years now still shiny no stone chips only bad bit is near the wheel bolts from taking them off all the time

A girl at work got her dad to do mine, he paints bits for aeroplanes.

He shot-blasted and painted my old ST rims for £60 for all 4! Awesome job it was I'd go for paint

painted mines myself
in mettalic black




then had them powdercoated satin black about a year later




having both done i would say powdercoat is a bit tougher, but if the paint is done right then you shouldnt really have any problems with chips or corosion, i chose to have mones podercoated because i went to touch up kerbing marks on the paint and got bad reactions, didnt have time to strip them down and start again as it was only a couple of days before f&m, otherwise they would still be painted
