106 gti with mi16 engine which is roughly 167-170 bhp... whack it on a set of throttle bodies
needs suspension sorting, kit removing, standard gti kit being put on and upgraded brakes etc mind.

engines for the most part are getting on a bit these days though....cost of a decent one would see you bodied on the standard lump putting out similar power with less weight. plus MI is notorious for oil surge issues

Lot of work involved, good idea though as it probably weighs less than the TU, if the TU is an iron block?
Bic (you'll know who I mean Paul) has a Longman built touring car engine going in his, which is essentially an Mi, in a way
I'm not 100% sure it's worth it, money wise though.

That has been done into a 106 GTi a few times there was one in Walkers Workshop in the bac of PPC about a year ago

Yeah, it will, but I think you have to do a fair amount of structural 'adjustment'

in the case of the MI it can be either depending on age.
TU is iron iirc

as for a gti-6 lump in the 106, its a ball-ache. i went to look at a vts last month, the girl selling its' bloke had one. front ended.....his solution to the massive understeer problem was to boot it out of every corner....

that's fair enough robin about the amount of work, I was sorta saying with the original ebay ad that it was already done and currently £500 for whole car
thing is...
firstly, on TB's inlet pointing the good way
secondly, more torque from the higher displacement lump
cams + tb's should see over 200 bhp.
More robust gearboxes mated to it (which is ideal for the higher power output).
MA boxes on 1.6 16v gti's are weak as chocolate, so the thought of getting an engine at 190 bhp with mods (which would still not make as much torque as a mi16/gti6 lump) would kill a standard gearbox, meaning high cost in getting a box that could take the abuse. Where as the mi16 would have a standard box capable to take the power all day long.
not sure on what the standard engine is made out of? it's not v.heavy? but it looks like iron hah.

TU appears to be iron, so, if you use the Mi, rather than the S16, the engine might be lighter....

I'm sure there's more to it though, there are literally hundreds on 205 MI's out there, but few 106's......you'd think if it were a straight forward thing, it'd be more common

Yeh no one here is saying it's easy.
I'm saying there's a car already done on ebay, it's a mess, and if you tidied and sorted suspension it could be a interesting project.

Anythnig is possble to an extent. I think you will find the fact why the the Mi16 lump is in more 205 GTi's is down the the open knowledge on them.
Also fewer 106 GTi's/Sao VTS have converted engine due to the fact the 16v TU lump is so tunable. If the engine was dog shit then you'd see more converions!
Can't see it beng that hard tbh.
More people do XE conversions due to the fact there is so much knowledge out there and readily availible parts...the fact that the small block XE's are dog shite helps

hah!
Shame we're not on the same session at combe, my 106 would make you eat your words
The reason I want rid of the 106 isn't because it isn't capable enough, it's more for the luxury of a newer car.

knowing what both cars are capable of, the clio is almost inevitable as the next step
your 106 isn't far off 172 performance anyway with that diff helping it out, but I know what you mean about newer car.
