now ive got the diesel im looking into building something for a bit of weekend fun.
mainly for the experience in building it rather than the actual usage of the car (only 19)
plan to use it obviously but in a year or so's time when its done.
ive narrowed it down to either a xe corsa or 106 xsi.
i know corsa's as ive had a few of them but the 106 i can get most parts for nothing as my old man works at a citroen dealership so have knowledge there too.
pro/cons of both?
any suggestions welcome

One is french
106 would make a better weekend car (track action) imo

thats what im thinking. know its french but we all know how good they are
better out of the box than a corsa so better start if a little more to buy

go for the car that isnt going to having complications with bodged conversions etc
106 - prob more fun on track, if a little gutless on straights.

yea, the 106 would be ok as a 1.6 8v. but would like to 16v it if i go ahead with it.
8v should be plenty for a newbie to track though?

dont worry about changing the engine untill you've done a full year or decent number of trackdays....

I disagree...
106 xsi and Corsa XE are not in the same class...
106 gti is similar to Corsa XE in pace, but gti most likely handles better...
106 Xsi would be seriously slower straight line compared to a Corsa XE, and Xsi suspension isn't that amazing.
Just get a 106 gti or XE.

afaik - a 106 xsi is a 1.4 - check your facts.

I think judging by your 1.6 8v comments, you're thinking of a S2 106 Rallye.
S1 106 Rallye is 1.3 8v.
But S1 106 XSi is definately only 1.4 and essentially pretty gutless.
Just get a cheap Saxo VTS. Same pace as a gti, but cheaper.

You should check yours
1.4 8v AND 1.6 8v, depends on the year of the car.

the 1.6 is far rarer and subsequently more sought after.
the 8v is a solid, reliable engine, ideal first track car tbh

no, I was literally saying 'check your facts' . Not saying it as if i was correct. I had no idea, so said 'As far as I know a 106 xsi is 1.4 - check your facts [first before buying one].'
Yeh 'definately' is wrong, I was just fairly sure they were 1.4, never seen a 1.6 xsi, what power do they make? same engine as s2 rallye? bet they're rare as rocking horse shit and that this guy perhaps didn't know there was a 1.4.

The 1.6 made 105bhp and 101lb/ft
The 1.4 made 100bhp and 90lb/ft
The 1.4 was 6kg lighter.
Some people prefer the 1.4 as it is revvier, some prefer the 1.6 as it's got more torque.
There's probably not a lot between the 2 though TBH.

I've had 2 1.6 Xsi's, a 1.4 and driven serveal GTi's and co-owned a VTS in the past few years...
OBV the gti is the one to go for power wise, but IMO the S1 is a LOT better looking, hence me still having my 1.6 xsi.
Between the 1.4 and 1.6, i'd have the 1.6 every time. The torque difference is VERY noticable.
As for the corsa ( i know i'm on a corsa site ) my dad drives a 1.6 16v sport, and imo the 106 out handles it in every way shape and form.
Oh and if your become a good enough driver, your soon be catching tuned clio 172's at brands hatch in the standard 1.6 eh Alex

As said i've had two of the fuckers...
They were a bit of a bodge up at Peugeot... they were a trial to see how the 106 would handle a 1.6 engine. for this reason they kept making slight changes between the years, so an M reg one will drive differently to an L reg one.
Obviously this says the later one you can find, the more refinments peugeot made, and the better the car is.
The N reg 1.6's were the first 106 to use peugeots own in house suspension system, that were properly built for the car, instead of =some outside company. This suspension was carried onto the GTi, but not the saxos... which is why you might notice a VTS body rolling more than a GTi (again the difference in noticable!)
BTW the pre-cat 1.4 made 100bhp, they were around till L reg, the later ones only made 90 iirc.
And thats that
And they ran the 1.6 along side the 1.4, iirc the 1.4 started in 1992, ended 1995 and the 1.6 started 1993 and ended 1996

Noooooo none of this rolling rocker shit.
Its basically the TU5J4P as in the GTi, iron block (1.4 was an alloy with liners same as the smaller engines) obviously with the 8v head. TU5J2
They also did 2 slight variations, not much difference as far as i've seen
But it takes some serious work to kill one... the one i've got now had the wrong headgasket, and half (trust me on this) the wrong water pump... for at least 20 thousand miles, and the reason i've taken it off the road?? Piston rings

Yeah they definately made a 1.6 XSI, not much quicker than the 1.4 though to be honest. 1.4 is plenty quick enough for a track car. Its not about speed at all. My Rallye is 1.6 8v and pretty standard engine wise, im confident it will be more than fine on track. My 1.3 8v was fun enough. Whatever 106 you get you can always 16v it later on, dont get a GTI as Paul says. To expensive to start out with, you can do the 16v conversino for about 500 quid to any old 106.

^^iffy statement, I'd not be comfortable "just chucking" a gti engine in without spending money on suspension and brakes. your £500 just doubled.

Cheers for that Norledge, never knew that stuff about the Xsi
To be honest butler 106 gti's aren't that expensive thest days, you can pick one up for like £1200, and saxo vts's are cheaper yet only real difference is a smaller rear ARB, which can be uprated fairly easily.

As said mate, the Saxo's have dampers and springs build by some suspension company with VERY little R&D... Peugeot used in house R&D in realworld situations actually on the cars... and trust me you can tell
