[serious thread]
So.. Liverpool have said today, that until they sell a few players, Barry isn't coming to Anfield.
do you think they've done the right thing in going for Keane rather than Barry?
personally, although i think Barry could develop further, they have done the right thing in getting a well established premiership striker to go with Torres

I personally think the whole Barry transfer has and still will depend on Alonso. If we get an offer of £15m then he'll go and Barry will come. If not (and I hope not) then he'll not.
I think Rafa always intended to spend the Crouch and other sales money on Keane - no matter what the Barry situation was. If it was a choice out of the two then he made the right choice though, as we have Alonso already so no need for Barry aswell.
Marc - we have next to no transfer budget (from what Rafa has been saying to the press anyway) hence why we need to sell before we can buy. Net spend is around £10m so far I think with plenty of players still heading for the exit door.
I personally think Rafa has been playing the press though and he'll pop up with one more big signing (ignoring the Alonso/Barry saga) before the transfer window closes.

^ be nice to free up some funds there. I would still like barry to come as I think he could be a great signing and versatile enough to fit in even if alonso stays.

They don't 'need' Barry, but would be a good signing all the same, they have 4 quality central/defensive midfielders in Gerrard,Mascherano,Lucas,Alonso, but they needed someone who can fill that gap between Torres and the midfield, Gerrard can do it, but it's better have plenty of options and Keane specialises in that area. So for me keane over Barry, for not much more than what Villa want for Barry is a better signing.

The only problem with that jiz is that we need some quality wide men if we want to play a 4-4-2. Pennant and Benayoun aint world class and kuyt and babel are not RMF or LMF as they prefer to play a more advanced role. If we got silva we could makeshift 4-4-2 by playing someone e.g. gerrard on the right but think rafa still has the 4-3-3 in his head especially as he's talking about using people like dossena more as a wing back and he's mentioned keane being versatille and able to play as an advanced right winger. I am not tottally convinced we are playing to our strengths if that's the case unless he can implement a couple of systems and rotate them

Somebody bidding Benayoun as well today if you believe the papers
All the talk seems to be he'll play Keane where he played Kuyt

Yeah he has spoken about the team being able to play a max of 2 or 3 formations so he can change these depending on the opposition and during games if needed with one or two subs only.
I still think he wants to play Gerrard in a similar position to what he did last year, and he'd be stupid not to considering the form of both Torres and himself when he was. I think he just wants to add quality round them - and Keane is a player who will do so.

Which is what I said above, maybe not his strongest position (although not 100% sure in reality) but i'm sure rafa knows what he's doing

Its fair enough buying him as a versatile player, which he is, but RM?RW is not his position and I think he'll suffer there :/
Needs more of a free role

I think its a simialr scenario with Arsenal, I think he'll play a 4-4-2/4-3-3 at home and a 4-5-1 away from home/in the bigger matches

Which is the bit i'm happy about.
I also think it would be silly to break up that partnership if you look at the finish we had to the season

Maybe he's bought him as a bench warmer? Or the FA Cup campaigner?

I think he'll be in a slightly more advanced role than what you currently see Kuyt playing. I'd draw a nice formation thing now if I knew it wouldnt make Tom go out and beat up the nearest old woman so just imagine if I did it would be showing Keane nearly up alongside Torres with Babel or Kuyt there too and then Gerrard behind.
The reason for him being more advanced is that our full backs are almost certainly going to be more advanced this year so will fill that gap created behind both Keane and Babel out wide, with Masch and Alonso/Barry also there as defensive midfielders.

Your full backs are lookign weak atm... Degan hasnt looked much cop from what little ive seen of him (mostly of him occupying the becnh in the Swiss team during euro08), dossena im unsure of, finnan lookign old and arbeloa(?) wanting to go back to spain... think youre likely to sepnd more there?

On the left - Dossena doesnt look a bad buy, but its wayyyy too early to tell. Aurellio is a great player if he can stay fit and Insua will be amazing by the end of this year, Im certain of that.
On the right - Arbeloa is first choice and everything coming out of LFC now is that they have no idea where the leaving stories came from and he is more than happy. If he did go though we'd certainly sign a new first choice. Degen was just a free transfer as backup with Finnan as he is getting on now and couldnt play a full season at this level consistantly well. Carra will also play there in big games aswell IMO.
So they arent too bad, better than they have been for a while now.

I suppose that's a valid point actually about full backs being more advanced therefore him +1 being slightly more avdanced than kuy and babel played last year. Babel was always getting caught up from playing to deep on the left, for me babel is a natural centre forward but that's another story and if it worked for henry ...
Draw a formation if you want cosmo
