Is it true that if you need to replace one then the garage usually has to do things to the whole engine?

Are they easy to replace yourself with some help from a friend?

yes its a common fault with them...

just keep your eye on the oil level...

will probably be fine, and not worth worrying about unless your trying to sell the car...

Fucking

Char, he's having a laugh. Timing chain is just a part, chains generally don't need replaced, it's belts that need replaced every 80k or 5 years (that's on my Fiesta at least). My engine was tappy, but all it was, was the hydraulic tappets weren't getting enough oil, so I bought some tappet cleaner from a local store and put it in the oil, hasn't done it since.

Tapping will be worse when cold, does it go away when warmed up?

Its a garage, they expect the same people to come back with problems. If you leave it a few weeks its not gonna get any better

Is the actual chain ratling? My mates 1.2 16v has 120k on the clock and still on the original timing chain and it used to be an ex learners car!
