Got two very short phone calls from my sister this morning to say that her and every member of British staff at the two watersports resorts she looks after in Turkey were arrested in the middle of last night.

Apparently it was irregularities with work permits but they're holding 30ish staff in a military prison! There are still guests on site but no staff to look after them, the UK headquaters of the company didn't even know it had happened; the British consulate in Turkey can't do anything as its Turkish employment law.

Best bet is she gets deported today, worst case who knows?

They've been told if they get deported today that they won't be able to get back to the resort to collect their belongings - almost every memeber of staff has a laptop, digital camera, clothes etc etc - nice easy pickings for the military?

yeah, she works for a British "watersports & activities" holiday operator.

She worked for their Greek resort last year and the first part of this; then they flew her to Turkey to sort out some of the resort's problems 8 weeks ago

surely the resort operators will send someone over pronto to keep check on the place and make sure their staff are ok (not that they'd probably be able to do much for the personnel)

TBH they were fucking useless, didn't even know it had happened until I phoned them - they also have no direct phone number for the two resorts and rely on mobiles by the sounds of it - mobiles that everyone has had taken off them by the military police

They're in a remote part of Turkey, the nearest town to both resorts is at least 1hr30mins, the embassy has never heard of the company or the resorts. The staff are all English speaking and the MP speak only pigeon English. The Turkish members of staff of the two hotels are bi-lingual but they've been taken some distance away so that's no use (they don't actually know where they are, except that my sister has mobile phone signal and they travelled for approximately 1hour inland at night.

I'm sure it'll be as simple as you make out

Just found out its semi-political.

They've been arrested as legislation was passed yesterday with regards to foreign workers in the country. The two resorts had a disproportionate ratio of British:Turkish workers.

The company has now chartered a plane to fly every member of staff to Kos in Greece and then fly them back from there; but that's dependant on actually getting them out of the Military prison today.

hope they are being treated well. i can imagine they aren't though as foreign MP tend to be cunts. i can't believe the embassy aren't getting involved if its a political matter.

Though legislation does not change over night, it does take months so the company is at fault in my eyes.
They must of know this was coming, but I admit the reaction was kind of quick.

I'm not sure, it could have been kicking about for months but given the current economic downturn and the fact that the UK, Australia and US have all said they were considering limiting the number of foreign workers to allow more jobs for patriots - maybe it was a rush legislation and has taken only a few weeks/days?

I'm not big on Turkish politics and economics tbh
