So i finally finished the main quest.. bit of a disapointing ending tbh.. didnt get to explore the majority of places either 
finished at about level 16..
Definately will restart and take things a bit slower and do more side quests..
Also how does the dlc work in relation to the ending? saying that its a prequel..

It's a simulation you take part in in the DLC.
When the third DLC pack comes out in March, you'll be able to continue roaming after you finish the game, and the level cap is raised to 30

Me and my boy finished it last week and I was pissed that it was this short I expected more , the ending is terrible I did not do all the minor missions and will not bother now , roll on resi 5.

Just reload a save before you did the final mission. I saved just before I had to report back to Elder Lyons and then go follow Liberty Prime.
Even though the Enclave have closed off most of the capital, you can still get there through the subways & tunnel systems.

I completed it today, I reloaded my last save thinking the ending would be different and that I could continue with all the quests, but it's not the case.
I restarted and will do more quests and be bad this time!

Short? wtf are you playing cos its not Fallout 3 
As said just re-load your last save and go back and do some other stuff, My last save is just after you follow the robot and enter the building. Ive just gone back out of the building and gone off leaving the robot and every else stood there 
I found this quite usefull for finding new missions and such that i missed first time roud -

Yeah ive been using that adam! seen some weapons i quite fancy 
gonna try and level up more aswell and do more sidequests.. im playing as a girl this time

Is there an correct order to do this game in?
So far I've got my base at Megaton, been to the Super Duper Mart (got the laser gun and food) Then I went over the bridge to the Metro Station and the house where the pimp is with his whores.
I've read a walkthrough and it says theres loads to do in Megaton before leaving and then it detailed a very differant path to the one I've took!

The main quest goes in a specific order (although choices you make during it can affect its outcome)
But you can do all the little side quests in any order you want tbh, or just wander about aimlessly for your next hit of Jet or something

yeah if you stick with the missions about your Dad thats like the main kinda thing and will bring you to the end of the game but there is loads more to do if you just head out into the wasteland and start meeting random people.

i wouldnt rush through the main quest as i did.. you end up finishing and thinking is that it.. ive started again and found quests i didnt even know about.. the first time i went through i disarmed the bomb so never met mr birke or tenpenny..

I disarmed the bomb as soon as I arrived in Megaton 
I can't believe how much there is to do before you finish Following In His Footsteps, will take me ages to get my next Trophy 
Also there were loads of medical supplies in the Vault that I never knew about so didn't take
