just been out tonight to try night pix in Nottm,
tried the NightSetting, but it flashes too soon as it's used to take pix at night of people infront ofth camera and leaves the 'lights' of objects in the picture in the background.
So I found that I was better taking the shot in a Normal/Auto/Manual setting but just turning the flash off. Is that the best way to take nigh pix??
both taken with the flash off..
taken with NIGHT.SETTING
with normal setting and flash on..
with FLASH off :thumb:
any tips fpr night time pix?

looks like you have cracked it mate! Get a DSLR and you can play about with the exposure even more.
This pic was taken in the moonlight using a 30 second exposure
You can also do some funky stuff like make light trails like this
But as far as shooting with your point and shoot camera, you have it nailed by the looks of it, did you use a tripod?

my IXUS 90is can do all those things the DSLR can do too, i just needed a camera i can slip in my pocket when on holiday.
The Ixus has image stabilisation so didn't use my tripod this time.
I can also do Colour Accent
like this... just keeeping red in the pic and the rest black and white..
then i picked my wife sweater colour... and anything similar also stayied in the pic.. like her hair.. sort of lol
you get the idea anyway
and Colour Swap too
I want to try the slower time setting, did you slow it down on the 'tail lights' with dropping the ISO to a low figure like 80?
I can alter the Exposure Compensation from -2..-1.. 0 ..+1..+2
wha t do they mean and I can alter the Long Shutter from 1"(sec) all the way to 15"(secs)
is thiswhat you did on teh moon picture on the landscape?

Yeah the moon picture was a 30 second exposure (long shutter), took a few attempts to focus the lense manually with nothing to focus on
The light trails pic was built up using 3 different pictures. (this is where the advantage of a tripod comes in) I took 3 exposures when there was traffic coming and then layered them in photoshop, adjusted the transparency levels to build up the effect of more traffic. The ISO was at 100 (lowest my camera will go) I cant tell you the exact settings as the picture is on my other PC. When I shoot at night i tend to slightly under expose my pictures (exposure compensation in the minuses) to prevent the streetlights washing out the pictures too much.
Ive got to say im impressed with what your camera can do for a P&S! Especially the colour thing, that looks very smart indeed

The IXUS range is superb. As you say night mode is best suited for portaiture, but you seem to have got the hang of it. Il be getting an 82IS in the near future I think.

I've only paid £149.99 for the Ixus 90is at Currys, Jacobs wanted £179.99 for the 85is, it does the same as the 90is but doesn't have the 3" screen.

do you use VIVID when taking pix too, is that a good setting to use to get 'vivid' shots?

I'm sorry mate, but really not. If that was the case, why does everyone bother with expensive D-SLRs? The quality of your pics is shocking. My phone camera is better...

Reason being without the flash on the camera is compensating with high iso and slower shutter hence a very small amount of blurring. Use a tripod and the results will be alot better, compare day time shots and you will see the quality is superb on the little IXUS cameras.

am i correct in thinking you can't alter the SHUTTER LENGTH SPEED and the + or - exposure compensation time together, it's either one or the other?
have a look at these I've taken this evening...
http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/salsachatta/Ixus90is%20TEST%20PIX/?start=all
are they better?
I've used a tripod,
The ones I think are better have a been set to -1 on the Exposure Compensation (this darkened the picture without making it to dark).
I also set it to ISO80 (I found this gave a blur effect or at ISO200 it made people walking by 'stand still' effect)
Do these look better than the othet nights pix?
thanks for the advance advice... gotta nail this camera malarkie so i know what I'm doing when i go on holiday lol

These are far better. However if that wheel was moving during your shot, you would have got some crackers.

taken some tonight at the LIGHT NIGHT in Nottm.... look here...
http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/salsachatta/light%20night/?start=all
I think I'm getting a bit better.
1" exposure seem sto give just boutthe right 'light' for the night pix. ISO Auto gives some good pictures and when I want trail light on cars.. ISO80 seems to do the job. A tripod with the IS trned off helps too.
