I.E. rolling up to a set of traffic lights 30mph in 3rd, no accelerator, slowing naturally then putting it in second and releasing clutch slowly to bring speed down to 15mph, still rolling etc.

Is it better to just use the brakes and change down when engine wont brake?

Best way to drive. I do it all the time, motorbike riders tend to take it from their bike riding to car driving.

I only ask as Ive started doing it now in my 4th year of driving, since I got a bigger engined car actually, so since the middle of 08, seem to have picked it up from somewhere

I was told to use the engine breaking in the gear your in then brake and dip the clutch as the revs reach towards idle speed. Idea behind it is that brake pads are cheaper to replace than a clutch.

I use both methods though, normally use the engine breaking method when I know the lights are gunna change again.

I find it cheaper to replace brake pads

I've always use every gear going up or down, suppose it would wear the clutch faster but.....

I usually use engine breaking, also in modern cars its free milage, as fuel is cut

Its true though, hence why instant MPG counts usually go to ---

That is true in the most part, but not as you reach the idle speed...

Mate, when I'm sat still in traffic my instant MPG reads ---.

Funny I can't average anything over 40 when I do a weeks worth of crawling to work.

But think about it. If you engine wasnt using any fuel, it wouldnt turn over

^ This is what I dont understand when people say 'letting off the accelerator cuts the fuel supply' but combustion engine requires fuel and air to mix and explode to power the pistons does it not?

i've always done it, done it coming off the a19 near me, from 70mph to a stop lol, helps loads when ya need to stop rather quickly too, saved the front of my car a few times lol. mine already needed a new clutch when i got it but i jst cant be botherd to put one in yet lol, still drives okay

I use engine braking all the time. When I was learning to drive I was always taught not to use the engine to slow the car down because it uses more fuel apparently

my clutch is on the way out though. Judders really bad when cold

The wheels are turning the gearbox and the gearbox is turning the engine basically, so it doesn't need to run to keep the pistons etc turning.
Unless you press the clutch in then it does need petrol.

Yea when you are changing down gears to slow it down then it uses more fuel as it is making the car rev to match the gearbox speed as you release the clutch.
