My girlfriends looking for a new car and came across a clio 172 on a 51plate its in really good condition 80k on the clock is that high? basically she needs to know the pro's and con's of getting a car like this as i've heard there unrealiable and can sometimes suffer with problems is this true,and also its really cheep he's asking for 2550. we've seen it its only just down the road from us. just need a few opinions who's own them as i dont want her to rush it to somthing and then regret it. heres a few pics not the best quality

check its had the belts done at some point. I don't think they are bad for reliability. Trim quality e.t.c could be better, but its a light, quick, cheap car.

ive had my 172 since jan this year! had the belts done first week i had it just be on the safe side good cars imo tho

I went with a mate to pick up one from Stockport the other week. I test drove it too and loved it. With the right suspension set up they handle like nothing I've ever driven. Considering they're French, they're build really well IMO.

I had an early 2001 172 and it had similair mileage, sold it on because it was just problem after problem (wear and tear mind) always said I'd have another one, but would have to be a newer one.

I havent had any problems with mine but not had it a month yet. Only problems ive got are self inflicted, rear tyres need doing, front disks need changing. Mine was well looked after though. I did look at one that had be ragged and I could spot the problems immediately. When you test drive it give it a good blast and throw it round some corners and listen out for anything moving under the car.

Lack of power and shocking build quality are the 2 main problems.

Completely disagree with the lack of power comment, not sure if John means that alot dont make 172bhp on the rollers though, which is true.

Mine needed a new front shock, bearings all round, front CVs, engine kept cutting out and I think going into limp mode, wouldnt go over 30 mph and engine light came on, done this atleast 3-4 times a day, put some redex through it and Super Unleaded and it seemed to cure it but I just sold it on not longer after getting a few bits done. Sold it for £2300

I think hes had one and wasnt impressed with it, thought mine was a flyer, loved it but as I said, would only have a newer well looked after one.

Yip meant it's not that fast.
It'll do 0-60 in the 7 seconds but it's boring getting there, was a well looked after example btw.

They are as quick as any 172bhp car, baring in mind how much they weigh. Its possible yours was down on power John? I was under the impression mine would be too refined going from a dedicated track car to a standard production car, but its actually good fun when you throw it about a bit.

80k is about average mileage, and 80k is piss all for a modern car to cover.
Problems can range from basic boy racer fatigue (warped brakes, dead clutch, clunking driveshafts) to other more intricate ones like ecu failure, coil pack sensors and gearbox problems.
For £2500 there isnt much else out there on par with one, tbh id go with a 306 GTi-6 over one but thats my opinion.

Get her to drive a couple as mentioned they are very marmite.
I love mine and its the best bit of money i've spent.
Just ensure you read up on the servicing schedules. Despite mileages check that the relevant belts are done as its a sign of a well kept example.
Do a bit of reading on cliosport.net which is a good resource.

There's no such thing as average mileage anymore and 80k is a lot of miles for a clio to have covered.

80k is a lot of miles for a clio to have covered.
In the case of mine, its alot of miles for one of these, they just start to fall apart.
