After my 1st shoddy effort I managed to modify an old template I had and make up a banner for now...
Do you guys think the site is looking any better now?
<--Clicky take 2--->
Again it's still not 100% complete but you get the general idea!

Looks extremely basic (and not in a sleek fast way) and doesn't scale well at all to my widescreen monitor.
Scrolling marquees are a bit 1998, the links at the bottom don't work and i'm not sure about so much blue.

John can you provide evidence of this please (what resolution have you got?) my email is ashley.martin.x16xe@gmail.com
Yea the colour scheme was chosen by my client so I don't have any say in that!
It's supposed to be basic tbh, the service page will probably be altered because it's not finished yet due to my client not giving me enough info!
I am surprised no-one has said they like the lightbox effect on the portfolio page!

Probably because litebox is pretty standard now and not overly special.
The site scales terribly in larger resolutions as John says. The middle section (text and content) expands while the menu / header doesn't.
It isn't just basic, it's amateurish. There is a difference. Something can be basic, but also professional looking and effective.
Sorry if I sound harsh... What is the relationship with your client? Are you a web designer, or just doing a website for them because you have a knowledge of some HTML?

I'm all for using the resolution but it just doesn't look right, 1920x1080.
There is a basic fast site then there's looking like its been thrown together in notepad in 10 minutes, depends whether the client has ever used the internet or not I suppose.
Forgot about that lightbox bit, dated, get rid.

Sorry I should have said that I am not a webmaster or a website developer (as you guys can probably tell )
This was for a project for my uni course, my relationship with my client is brief and vague, he did not give me a clear outline of what he wanted and just said yea I want this I want that but what can you do with a builders website (except list what they do and show pictures?)
Any ideas are very welcome

That's really bad, I based it on the average resolution 1024x768 in which it looks ok!
What features do you think I should have on there?

blue background is a bad start nearly all sites tend to have a white background these days. best thing to do is look at lots of popular sites on the internet and go for a similar style. I would seperate it more have your title with maybe a logo in the top left? then a row of link across the top with a different background colour etc..

Sorry but that is shit. I'd only do that for my uni course if i wanted to fail or scrape through with a pass.
This is a site about builders... suprisingly it doesn't look like yours
http://www.findabuilder.co.uk/
- you can have simple designs with simple colours that look good.... Just need to put some effort in.

English is piss poor
I'm not looking for a fight, but, I could have written that in notepad with my eyes shut and I don't go to Uni.
I wrote a better website for a local florist for my 6th form A-Level IT.
I'd start from scratch.

Well im pretty stuck now, the project has to be finished by tomorrow and I'm not sure whether to use an old template I made before (different style to the one used here) or try a brand new style but risk not getting my final written report finished or the user guide complete!

What does your other one look like?
To be fair, it couldn't be much worse....
What course are you doing?

You will probably find the write up is worth more marks than the site itself mate.
Put your time and effort into the write up!

As long as you explain why it's bad in the write up and what you'd do to improve it it should be fine.
