As some of you guys will know.

On Friday 15/05/2009 I SWAPPED my Corsa, For A Volkswagen Passat 2001 Y Reg 1.8 20v Turbo with 124,390 Miles on the clock.
I still seem to believe that I got myself a Fairly good Deal, Others May agree too.

Out With The Old:

In With The New:

Being the person that I am, I wanted to know what sorts problems I am likely to encounter with the VW. As it's only my second car and i have NO knowledge of VW's What-So-Ever, or any car for that matter.

After Reading The Owners Manual and sitting in the Car Playing with all the Dials so that i knew what I was touching, I Decided It was a good idea to sign up to an Owners Club, Were i came accross WWW.UKPASSATS.CO.UK.
I sat on the computer for most of the evening as i wanted to know, what i could be running into if i did have problems.

After Introducing myself and reading for about an hour i came accross the word PLENUM. I thought there was going to be some sort of joke... Not knowing what this was i clicked and read further. GOOD JOB I DID

For those that dont know,(LIKE ME) It's were the water runs off the windscreen and down by the Bulkhead, there are 2 holes with bungs in that the water is SUPPOSED to drain out of.

The Following morning i popped the bonnet to see if i could see any GUNK/WATER. I DONT have a picture but without exaggerating, the water was 1" 1/2 deep.

I took the All Seals off (as i was going to be cleaning what i could, quick clean), Battery + Battery Tray out and pulled the first bung out.

I got this much Water, + Gunk!

I gave the Bulk head a quick wipe down and did what i could with the second Bung. But it was hiding behind the Master Cylinder + 2 Pipes so i was unable to take it off. Also, There is a cable that runs down the 2nd Bung hole that was preventing me from getting the Bung out. Whats the cable/pipe For?

while I was in the engine bay, i decided to give it a quick rinse. being that the bay has loads of plastics, they came off and had a wash

For this i used the old method:
Thats right; 1 Bucket + 2 Hands method

Befores:

Afters:

Bareing in mind "I KNOW NOTHING!"
IS THIS NORMAL?

Things to do: ***May change as to being a family car + the other half of course***

Fully Clean Interior + Exterior
Especially These Areas + Door Shuts:

Change Aerial:

Then Plenum Chambers can cause some Problems (Water Leaks) Its a Recall from the Factory.

There will be one Possibly 2 underneath the Car aswell.

Has it got Full Service History,Cambelt been changed Etc?

Whats the coolant like in the Bottle?Could well be a knackered Oil Cooler.

the only real problems i come across at work with these are

Bottom of radiators corroding
Boot struts seizing
Air mass meters causing lack of power
And front suspension arm bushes love to wear away quickly.

Think ive got aerial sat in my toolbox at work if you want it?

most cars suffer from the drain bungs in the scuttle area clogging up with leavs ect.
i know for a fact we do alot of recalls at work where you have to modify the bungs so bigger deposits can exit,

the scuttle fills up with water and creates a sloshing noise round corners and the water seeps through the heater box and makes the carpets wet, frows doen abs/air bag sensors and all sorts,
no nice really for the sake of a rubber bung
