I was watching Top Gear ealier, and for some reason when the audience started clapping, I asked myself, "Why?"

I understand we do it to show our appreciation or our joy, but what I was wandering was, who was the first person to clap, and why did it catch on? Or do we clap as a natural human reflex? Did cavmen clap when they saw something good, or something made them happy?

Anyone else wandered about this?

Someone holds up a card saying 'applaud' and you get shot if you don't.

Good point.

I wonder if orange was named after the fruit, or vise-versa.

I reckon i could shout longer than i could clap, and my shouting would be louder too.

You'd both be wrong then unfortunately

Cut about shouting at people when they've done something you approve as well and see the results.

I wouldn't just shout "aaaaaarrggghhhh", it would be something along the lines of "woooooooooo", or "yaaaaaaaay", but then again, i suppose people already do that even when clapping.

Following on from this, what's to say my red is the same as your Red? I might see red as what is really your green, you would always have been taught it as red though so know no different.

This could then expand on to why certain colours are peoples favourite, I.e they see them differently. For example red is one of my favourites but someone else might like green but to them it's what interpet as red
