10k aint a half marathon???

Tips....

Go to a proper running shop and get trainers specially fitted. Good shops like He Runs She Runs will put you on a treadmill to see how you run and then will advise you on different trainers. Believe it or not, different trainers are designed for different style runners.

Get some routes planned. Don't always run the same route or you will get bored.

Start small and build up.

Get an arm attachment thing for your i-pod and some over the ear headphones. Running with music is alot easier. (I find anyway)

If you do 30-40 minutes you should be competing for Scotland!

I'd aim for under an hour and if you manage that you've done well.

my first 10k last year was 55 mins, im now on 47 mins. Doing the great north half marathon in a couple of weeks. Do small runs to start with and get your leg muscles used to running before you build up to the bigger distances. Get proper running shoes for your running style, they will make the world of difference and help prevent injury.

Just to echo what others have said really...

Start of short distances, 1-2 miles, till you are comfortable doing that regularly. Then up it.

Try to mix in longer slow runs and shorter fast runs.

Check out this website for getting an accurate idea of how long your planned routes are...

Get some kind of strapping for our knee possibly because running on the road is going to do it no favours.

Running fucks your knees and ankles, its a good way to set yourself up for joint pain in the future! If you have bad knees id advise staying away from running at all costs as it will only make things worse.

However i used to do a lot of running before i started weight training (8-10k 4 nights a week)

Training up for it you should train 2-3 times a week, start off running 2k then go up 1k each week till around 8k, then aim at shaving some time off your 8k time and then nearer the time do a few 10k drills and try and keep improving your time.

Get yourself to a proper running shoe shop (not jjb etc) to get fitted for some proper shoes. £60-£80 should buy you some decent ones!

make sure u take care and build up to it if u got a dodgy knee..

10k is roughly 6.3 miles, so 1/4 marathon.

I've done a few, roughly run them 50mins, ur normaly get all sorts so dont worry..

i went with the running shop specific for my feet and n joke within a week i couldnt run my ankles ached so much, changed back to asics (sp) and felt alright again, trainers make a massive difference

i was always told increase your runs by no more than 10% each time

i did a half marathon with a years training - went from really unfit to better then Ive ever bean. Did it in 2 hours which was OK concidering the 65000 people you had to run with lol

dont practice long distances on a treadmill though as its completly different to running on roads on your feet
