24-70mm f2.8L for sure and maybe the 35mm f1.4Ls. Dont think we will bother taking any big zooms, try and keep the bags as light as possible as its a 4 mile walk everyday from where we are staying to where we are photographing!

good shout! how do you go about insuring the gear for that trip? i doubt standard travel insurance would cover anything of that value.

Ive no idea tbh, the gear belongs to my university so im presuming they have some special policy but i really dont know.

edit - just checked my emails and it says we can take anything we like from stores and its up to each of us (there is 4 of us going) to pick the kit we want and think we will get the best results from, so I have a choice of 35mm, medium format and then the digital 400D or the 5Ds and all the lighting kits if we want! Fuck carrying a Mamiya Rb and a Bowens kit round fucking Kenya, jesus

Not worth taking a bigger lens for the chance of seeing some wildlife, obviously wouldn't be that great for the publication, but from a personal view, i'd love to take some pics of the wildlife!

Fantastic opportunity.

But there's no way I would go to Kenya without a 400-500mm. Just me though.

my team leader went africa last year and some of the shots of the wildlife he got are sensational.

i'd definitely take bigger lenses to get some awesome shots as it's a once in a lifetime opportunity (unless you're loaded).

Me too, definately take a massive lens - how gutted would you be if you see a lion or something while walking and missed the shot!

I personally wouldn't go to Kenya without a big zoom mate.
Its possibly a once in a life time adventure and even if your not interested in wildlife, you would KICK yourself (hard) if you missed opportunity because your didnt have the focal reach

Quite possibly my next lens, when money is free'd up
100-400mm

Otherwise it will be a 70-200mm F4 with 1.4x converter

right, had a meeting today and basiclly they have give us pretty much free reign over what kit to take, ie, they will buy us anything they dont have in stores so long as I can justify it! So can anyone reccomend anything? Besides lenses i was thinking of asking for a white background and a portable lighting kit and/or a ring flash do do some proper nice portraits. Ive decided carrying equipment isnt going to be an issue, i just want the best images possible, no compromise.

Thoughts?

The 100-400 is good but I don't like the push-pull zoom. I wouldn't say its a particularly big or heavy lens.

300mm F4 prime I've got is much better though and will take a 1.4 converter much better.

As for equipment I'd forget about the white background. Couple of foldaway coloured reflectors might be ok though, and a couple of stands obviously.

Adam, Are you mad? Your going to an amazing place and you want to shoot White Background shots? You can do that at home in conditions that you have control over!

If money was no object and your the only shooter, then I'd have:

Your Camera body plus a back-up in case something goes horribly wrong
Lens:
24-70mm L - Group shots - landscapy
85mm - Portraits (such a sharp MOFO this lens)
300mm L OR 100-400mm - Safari shots - which I'm sure you will end up doing.

Accessories:
1.4x Converter - for that bit of reach if needed (only small so worth taking)
Bags and Bags of Cards - Multi-burst action!
Lens cleaning kits
Reflectors
Fold-away umbrella's to attach to flash guns if you want to try a little bit of off-camera lighting while your out there.

Minimum!
