Hi Guys, i know a few on here have projectors so just have a few questions. Ive always wanted a projector, ive now got my own place and have been told im getting a 15% annual bonus this month so ive decided to 'splash out'.

Firstly, ill point out that it will be used purely for films(played through Xbox) at night/weekends and possibly gameing on the Xbox 360 every now and again and so only the Xbox will be linked up to it. My 32" is more than sufficent for everyday viewing.

I need to know the best size screen to go for? And the best HD projector(for around £500) We currently sit this way:

But to get more length from the room and to enable me to place the projector/wires a little more inconspicously id be looking at making use of the other sofa for projector use like this(ball chair will be moved):

The distance from wall to wall(projection distance is 16 foot, is this OK?). Also, i want to put the projector on a roof stand here(circled), will this be too close the the wall(arrowed), ie, will it need to be in the centre(squared)?

Apologies for the poor iPhone pictures.

Find a projector that you want, then go here - http://www.projectorpoint.co.uk/ - and use their screen size calculator to work out what the min and max size will be (based on the zoom lever on the projector). Find something that'll suit your wall at your throw distance. When you've established that, hold a piece of string where the edge of the screen will be and draw it back to where the lens will be. If the string doesn't touch the wall, you're fine.

I was looking at an Optoma HD200X but at my throw (17ft so comparable to yours), the screen is MASSIVE, far too big for the opposing wall, even at minimum zoom. The solution to that would be to mount it in the middle of the room rather than at the edge, which isn't ideal.

Cheers Ian, massive help and good idea with the string, ill give it a go.

Following on from Coles suggestion, im looking at this on Play.com when it comes back in stock:

http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/9467049/Optoma-GameTime-GT-3000-DLP-Projector-With-Portable-Speakers-Backpack/Product.html

According to that Website Ian the above projector at 16ft throw will need a screen size of Min 115" and Max 122" if ive worked it out right. The screen that comes with it is 84" so im presuming that Play want you to mount the projector closer to the screen(not possible in my case). Does this mean that the quality will be a lot poorer at my distance?

Nice Deco!

I have to say personally I think projectors are shit for home use.. Much better off getting a decent 50" LCD.

Have you seen a modern projector? Mine is over 5 years old and as long as there is no direct sunlight onto the screen its fine. Come the evening when the footy or film is on a 50" screen is nothing in comparison to a 2m projection screen. You might bea bit emersered into a film on a LCD/Plasma but with a projector the effect is much more cinema like.

While I agree a projector is not suitable for replacing a LCD there are many times it will blow it away.

Yep.. We've got two AMAZING projectors in the office.. Several grand worth but its not good unless the room is totally dark there are very few occasions at home when I would want to be sat in the dark watching a film.

Plus most are not suitable for HD gaming (too laggy).

I'd much rather have a massive LCD on the wall.

If I had a huge spare room I'd consider setting up a home cinema but when it comes to everyday tv watching etc. who wants the agro of sitting in the dark and waiting for projector bulbs to cool down

Laser projectors are quite impressive but they are big bucks.

I raised in my initial post that it would be purley for films at night/weekend with the Mrs/Mates and gaming with mates, who usually have to work in the day and so 99% of the time it will be at night. LCD is fine for day time.everyday viewing

Thats what im thinking, perhaps wont go for that deal becasue the screen is far too small for my projection distance but i am looking at that projector. Trouble is i can only base my opinions on other people reviews as i don't know whats good and what isnt.

Personally I couldnt survive with that little teeny TV you've got so I'd have to spunk the money on a MAHOOSIVE LCD with a good refresh rate for the XBOX

My parents gave me that 32" a few years back when they upgreded to 42 and more recently 50, its not brilliant but does the job. Plus i did a rushed job of putting the wires in the wall so changing it means channeling the wall out again

Plus everone has big TV's so even 50" don't really impress me anymore, whereas 80"+ HD quality...

I hope you're intended to splash out on a HD projector then as that one isnt.

Put the 32" in the bedroom and get a 50"..

I'm re-doing my spare room at the moment and I'm toying with making it into an "entertainment" room which is basically an excuse to get a bigger tv downstairs and put the massive LCD down stairs into the spare room for XBOX/Porn.

Depends what you want. Projector in the dark at 110" is a totally different experience.

Plus it can work out cheaper.
