There is nothing balancing that ruler or stop it from falling over.

If you look at the end of the ruler it's been blurred, so i'm assuming this was how it was done

Also, isnt there a few mm's before the 0 at the start of every ruler? the one above starts at 0 bang on. Could be wrong, been years since I used one

Of course its real, and even if it isn't, it's entirely possible. It's a standard class 1 lever which, to be in equilibrium must merely have the same load on either side. As the heavier end of the hammer is to the left of the fulcrum, it balances the weight of the handle and the rest of the ruler.

The fact that fulcrum is balancing on the end of the ruler as well is no problem either, there's no sideways loading so there's sufficient friction between the ruler and the table for it not to slide off.

It would take off.

I would say real, If you get the centre of gravity right it is possible. It doesn't have to balance between two things.

Possible - yes.
