What are peoples opinions on them, obviously being such an old car theres bound to be some things that are prone to go wrong
Kinda fancy getting one as a little project, as my old man used to have one and i loved it so much!
What things should i check look out for when viewing etc

I like them. series 1 even better.
they rust. alot. that would be my main tip.

Yeah i heard alot about the rust issues etc, but what other things are common problems etc

look for rust, mileage (check fits with wear and tear), accident repair, service history, originality if that is what you want (ie non tuned). Try to buy from an enthusiast RSOC member etc.

unless you plan on spending 3-4k i wouldnt bother dan, so many shitters out there.
get one from an rs owners member etc not some shit on ebay etc.
Remember decent ones hold there value bud

dont just think it looks clean by its looks..
check underneath, boot floor, under carpets, battery tray all the common places on a rs turbo, and the main area underneath the kit..
known soooo many people rs turbos, reckon there mint and tbf they are, but underneath the kit is a different thing, they rot silly amounts underneath the kit (arches/skirts)
to get a nice one, there around £4k, well one worth buying imho as they do have alot of faults if people have messed with them which being an rs turbo it will 99% has..
and standard there slow as muck..
my mates got a
2 owner
80k miles (fsh)
black series 2 on 17" diamondcut 7 spokes, its a nice bit of kit
few nice tweaks to safe 180bhp just to take the edge

The most important thing when buy an RS Turbo whether it be an S1 or and S2 is the condition of the body work. This is often the costly item to deal with.
Always buy an enthusiasts owned one through Passionford or the RS owners club as the owners often spend a fortune on them. Dont be scared of one that needs mechanical attention as they are pretty simple to work on by todays stanards and parts are plentiful.
Also buy the best you can afford as it will save you money in the long run.
Things to look for are
Rust (battery tray sunroof void and most pannels)
buy an post 90 spec one
buy a restored one
Remeber they are now knocking on the doors of 20+ years old so dont expect powersteering or good brakes
Great cars with a lot of soul IMO but I would always buy an S1

Used to prefer s2's until recently but after seeing more and more 1's I think that would be my pref now

My mate Craig found a one owner from new RS Turbo which was so original it didnt even have an Alarm. Radiant Red and only 80k miles Needless to say after a week of owning it, it got nicked
I'd budget 4k for a decent one just looking at them now.

a lot of bullshit in this thread tbh..
ive owned 2, both were my daily driver. both were fast and both never missed a beat..
dont be put off by horror stories if you can find a good one, underseal it and look after it you will be laughing.
great cars to own, such a road presence, lovely to drive, my last one did not feel 20 years old at all.
as said rust is a major problem, try and find one with a solid sills, sunroof and battery tray.. rusty arches arent the end of the world in all honesty.
as for the CVH if modded propely or looked after is an absoloute belter of an engine, easy to work on, great engine,.
if you want one buy one.. if you underseal it, wash it regularly and look after it, itll be fine..
and no there not "slow as muck" standard

i have owned 3 mk4s now (x2 1.6 cvh na and 1 cvh 'efi' turbo)
rust isnt the end of the world but you dont exactly want to have to chop out the old arches, new ones put in and have to get it all painted on a car you have spent x amount buying, just check the arches no doubt, its a must imo if you want that piece of mind..
just want to add a standard rs turbo is nothing against a xe corsa/nova, even with a few mods it would struggle..

so? id rather turn up in a slower RST than an Badboy XE corsa. and why compare a standard rs turbo to an xe nova/corsa?

i said an xe nova/corsa because most people on here know what there like (been in one of driven one) so they imagine what an rs turbo would go like..
and why badboy xe corsa? rs turbos are mainly driven by kevins anyway with there caps on, so there as bad as eachother..

I would,thats exactly what i would expect a 1.6 turbo to be. Around 2.0 na spec.
youd expect a 20 year old 8v turbo with 120bhp to be the same as a 150bhp n/a engine would you? interesting

and if you really want to compare, surely you wouldnt use a converted car IE a corsa., but rather a MK2 astra GTE or mk3 GSI???

rs turbo standard is 132bhp..
and when ever do you see a standard rs turbo, there all chipped and boost turned sky high if any kevin has had there hands on it..
where as a xe nova/corsa has just had it dropped in by the local 'badboy'
so i would say its fair tbh..

So its a 15 year old 150bhp engine against a 132bhp 20 year old engine. Doesn't seem that unfair to me.
