A 22-year-old man has been arrested after a woman was run over and killed trying to stop a thief stealing her sports car in Greater Manchester.

Lynda Hankey, 42, was thrown on to the bonnet of her MG after she saw the man in the driver's seat of the car outside her home in Worsley Mesnes.

The incident on Thursday was witnessed by her partner, Jamie Hudson, and Ms Hudson's five-year-old son.

Detectives have arrested the man on suspicion of murder.

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Hopkins, leading the investigation, said a team of 30 detectives had been working on the inquiry.

Car found

He said: "I'm really pleased to say that because of a member of the public hearing the news stories today we have now recovered Lynda's vehicle and are carrying out a detailed forensic investigation of that vehicle."

Although a man is being questioned, the detective said there could be further arrests.

"I would be clear that our team of detectives will do absolutely everything they can to bring those people to justice as soon as possible. That, at this moment, is our priority," he said.

Police believe a number of people may have been involved in the theft

"Our thoughts are very much with Lynda's family at this horrific time following this sad death.

"The individuals involved are extremely callous, with very little regard for life."

Prestt Grove and Cornwallis Road were closed off while officers dealt with the incident on Thursday night.

Ms Hankey was struck when she stepped in front of the car, which she had left running, at about 1620 GMT.

"The offender drove straight at her and knocked her into the air, leaving her severely injured," the detective added.

"Very sadly Jamie and her son witnessed this," he said, adding that the pair had been left "absolutely devastated".

Officers remain in the neighbourhood making door-to-door inquiries and offering reassurance to the tight-knit community, he added.

Members of the public have been urged not to leave cars running unattended because of the threat of theft.

I can honeslty say if this happened to me, I would just watch them take the car and give myself a little telling off, it's insured, I can buy a new car it's not a problem, she should have just let them take it, rather than try and stop them.

RIP anyway, poor kid having to witness that.

I'm sure a law abiding citizen like myself can use my intelligence to just tell the police that they opened my front door and made me give them the keys, they wouldn't really get believed with any denial they came out with.

Similar thing happened to a mate's (of sorts, used to be good mates with him) Dad when he was dropping his wife off at the Airport. Left the engine running whilst he helped her with the bags from the boot, two guys tried to nick the car and he tried to stop them - they ran him over and he got stuck under the car and died.

They were caught and got a fair while in prison iirc.

My mates dad is paralysed from the waist down because he tried to stop theives stealing his car while he was on the drive next to it. They drove off down the road with him hanging out of the window. A car came the other way and hit him and broke his back.

The car was found burnt out, they never found the thieves.

I know, my mate got married and his dad managed to walk in these big calipers because he said it was something he was determined to do. He struggled and has absolutely no feeling at all in his legs, it was only the calipers enabling him to walk and his upper body. He's a pretty couragous bloke, he was very active before the accident which made it all the more difficult for him after.

If you tried to stop them in Glasgow there's a good chance it's being stolen for a supermarket shooting and you'd get shot up the arse.
