...such as Car Giant, The Car Shop Megastore etc.
I know you can get completely ripped off with finance and other add-ons, but what are the quality of the cars like? Are they all serviced up and got good histories, or do they buy any car and make a massive mark up on it?
Anyone bought from them before but not used their finance options? Are they only really for people for shit credit ratings etc?
Any information would be great

No experience whatsoever, but my instincts tell me you don't get a cheap car for nothing.
I'd expect lots of ex-company cars, hire cars/courtesy cars which have all been thrashed to within an inch of their life, but given a wax so they look clean and tidy.

It seems you're right. I bet it's a hassle seeing the service history unless they're kept in the car.

The other half got her car from Motor Point.
She paid a fair price for the car, good service etc. The only problem she had was that she looked at a car in one colour, but wanted it in black, so they said they had one at a different site that's identical except for colour, but when it arrived it had manual rear windows not electric like the one she looked at.
The car was paid for with a bank loan though, not finance.

Find a car you fancy and go look at it, make a judgement based on the car.

I'm not looking to buy right now, but just didn't know whether they should be avoided like the plague or not
Plenty of people seem to use them though so they can't be that bad.

Most people couldn't tell a lemon if it was squeezed in their eyes though.
The 1 and only way to find out is to go and look at the car and take it from there.

Do what John says. Just don't pay for something without looking at it properly.

At carcraft down the road from me. They charge a £90 (i think) deposit just to take the car for a test drive as there all lock up in a compound.
EDIT: Non refundable

Bought my Corsa from Motorpoint. Got a really good service, a decent price for my C2 at trade and overall the car was a decent price.
Looked at Vauxhall but they wanted a few hundred more for the same car with the smaller 1.2 engine and couldn't give me what i had all ready been offered for the C2.
CarCraft are currently robbing bastards!! Dad got my Mum's 307 at a decent price so m6y Mum went back with my sister and paid around 2k more than she should have. They got an ok price for my Dads car but still could have got more. Women though, just will not listen.. My sister now has seen advertised what i originally pointed out.. She still won't listen next time i try and tell her something..

bad side:
most are ex fleet cars, so look around at other cars with near the same number plates and mileage.
admin fees are just a waste of money.
you get passed around from person to person and doesnt have the personal touch to it.
good side:
if something does go wron after you brought the car, they do pay for repairs without having to claim it back.

The new cars are pre reg and the used are what I'd describe as artificially second hand.

ford of winsford are our biggest customer at work, every car gets serviced, full valet, front pads, discs if req and rear discs and pads if req. the spend a fortune.
only problem with supermarkets is they always give you a really low bid on a trade in as thats where they pull most of ther money from the deal.

On paper maybe, but not all pre- reg cars are actually used. Many are purely registered at month end/quarter etc just to achieve manufacturer bonus etc.
Only downside to pre-reg is that the warranty starts ticking down at the point of registration, and the fact it may have sat idle for months in a field.

Don't think I described that very well. I was saying that the used cars will be turned into used cars by the manufacturers leasing them out under strict milage policies e.t.c... as there is such a market for them.

Yes and no. Some manufacturers (particularly fiat) are getting back into the short rental game. All got burnt badly when the recession came and margins were skinny at the height of the economy.

Seems pretty good and you can get it in nice guise i.e. Active Sport, Sporting etc. Same engine and gearbox (pretty much) as in the Panda 100hp too. Insurance group 3 or 4, 47mpg, 6 speed, 100ps, can't go wrong really! Would be a nice step up from a 12v.
