It's one of those threads I'm afraid

Recommend me a car for £4000 to £5000 under the following criteria - I've also done a poll of my shortlist. Choose an answer or add your views below.

Criteria is:
Under 50k miles.
Petrol or diesel - average 45mpg +.
Tax no more than £150.
Air conditioning.
Alloys.
No bigger than a Focus/Astra.
Reliable with no-known problems.
No stupid cambelts every 40k miles.
Priced between £4000 and £5000.

Basically, it needs to be relatively cheap to run as a daily runner and be reliable too. And generally speaking, something you could put up with for 3+ years.

I know it's a shit choice, but that's what happens when you have a £5000 budget I'm afraid.

1.9 Astra's are out of the question.

Zetec S is in the £5000 budget, and a much more exciting car than any of those.

I care when it'll cost me £400 every other year.

Kia's are out of the question in terms of budget.

Needless to say by my choice (and although I post on a forum full of car enthusiasts), I don't have a car for fun or as a hobbie. It's to get me from A to B. I have a bike with 2 wheels and no engine for fun and adrenaline.

Cambelts on most cars aren't 400 quid, half that maybe.

200 quid every 2 years to widen the choice of cars is much more sensible.

The same as going to bosch for services because everybody knows bosch are great at servicing cars

15k I'd say. No, not worth getting a derv, but tbh, looking at Corsa C's, there isn't much in it spec wise.

But not having a derv in the larger cars rules them out, because of shite running costs, as I don't earn that much.
