last night, heard a noise suggesting the water pump gave up and knocked the timing out of sync. So I tried to drive it home before any damage was done...I didn't get home.

The bottom end spins, top end doesn't so cambelts gone. I havn't heard any loud bangs etc so I hope the valves are still all nicely there.

it's an 8valve so I'm hoping it's not caused any damage. I mean when the belt snapped it literally just lost drive and the car rolled to a stop, there weren't any nasty noises.

how hard is it to do the water pump?
worst case scenario bent valves, fucked rings etc?
Do I have to have the camshaft timed up to TDC by a specialist tool?

With the belt off, the water pump is very easy, couple of bolts hold it in place. They only fit one way, so alouth it says some need timed, they only go one way.

you will have bent valves if your belt actually snapped, but only 8 to replace not to bad!
why would your rings fuck? :/ they'll be fine.
take the head off, get standard valves, get a quick skim, new belt/pump.

if you or a mate could rebuilt your head, wont cost too much.

timing, theres a mark on the crank pulley, and the camshaft, time both up and then tension the belt, becauses it's 8v the belt should be pretty easy.

If the cambelt slipped or snapped then yes they will be bent, guides could also be cracked.

t b fair my mate snapped a cam belt all we did woz push it into the garage and fitted a cambelt and it woz fine runs nicely to this day

We stripped down a 1.6 8v that had destroyed its water pump, the valves were fine in it, something to do with being in oil? Not too sure myself, my cousin is the big engine person but it turned out that after a new water pump the engine was fine so you may be lucky

how do you know if valves are bent? What if they are bent by a fraction of a mm? you cannot see with naked eye...same if barrels are scored etc?

i can assure you if the engine was running, belt came off, and engine stopped itself, you have fucked valves.

to find out if they are bent you need to take them out the head.

You will see if they are bent when you look at them in the head. I best 8 valves before xmas and it was quite clear.

you probably havent damaged the valves at all as the 8v are independant engine meaning that if the cambelt does snap the vales dont always get fcuk'd

yer, that's what i thought. the 8v and 16v are very differently designed. Anyway i will find out all the juicy damage tomorrow.

u should be able t buy a valve spring compressor tool from halfords there about £20 and well worth the buy

we're looked at it, the end of the water pump that connects to the cambelt is smashed to pieces. Getting a friend to fit a new pump and belt, (as I have no idea about fitting a new pump, plus he will have to time it up as I turned the key after the belt snapped so the bottom pulley would have spun out of sync).

Also, not going to bother inspecting the valves, I don't have the long extension bars needed to get the inlet manifold off and I can't be arsed, if they're broken we'll find out when we turn the key. It was suggested to me to fit a new pump and belt and turn it over by hand but after asking around, apparently you won't know until you turn it by key anyway.

Then I'm gonna turn the key and hope for the best. I don't think the valves will be hurt, even my mate who works in a garage, said 10% chance they will be damaged because of the engine and my speed (less than 30).

Going to fit a new thermostat after fixing the initial problem, apparently they can run without a thermostat anyway and it's main advantage is for the heating inside of the car.

I'll update this thread anyway and let you guys know what happens with the valves and if I get it fixed.

When you put the belt on turn it over by hand. That will let you know if there is bent valves without doing anymore damage.

That's what me and my dad thought, but we said to my friend who runs his garage that we're gonna do this and he said you won't really know until you do it by key
