Ministers have been accused of a "stitch-up" to pass laws cracking down on digital piracy before the election.

MPs voiced anger at the digital economy bill - aimed at supporting artists' copyright and tackle illegal file-sharing - being rushed into law.

Former minister Tom Watson had argued it would be a "catastrophic disaster" if the bill was passed as constituted.

However, the bill was approved by MPs by a majority of 142 votes and it passed through the Lords on Thursday.

The legislation was one of more than 10 bills being considered by parliamentarians in the "wash-up period" - the remaining time before the legislature is dissolved.

Parliament was prorogued late on Thursday afternoon, meaning any bills that had not been passed would fail to become law.

'Repercussions'

Under the terms of the Digital Economy Bill, internet service providers will be obliged to send letters to any of their subscribers linked to alleged infringements.

Copyright holders will be able to apply for a court order to gain access to the names and addresses of serious infringers and take action against them while ISPs would be able to suspend accounts of offenders.

This has always been a farce and they've just confirmed that.

A crackdown on filesharing would make me, and I'm sure many others, make the jump to SSL newsgroups.

It's another example of Labour thinking that there should be a law for everything. They're now even making laws about things they don't understand. It cries of not being thought through and will be totally out of date in months.

The second the election has been announced a block should be put on anything being passed as it results in them rushing through stuff with no consideration.

This

I really didn't expect the filesharing clause to go through, tbh few expected it to survive the wash-up. I'm even more surprised the lords didn't stop it today. The full effects of the law are a year and a half away at least though thankfully, assuming nothing happens in the meantime

This.

It's enough reason to vote out this fucking joke of a Government because if they get into power again we will see more laws like the anti-terrorism law which was pushed through in the wake of the London bombings only for it to be used in just about every situation the Government see fit.

Like people taking pictures of parliament are being arrested under the law, fucking scum. Worse than Nazis.

Good question ask friends normally for invites? I've got 5 invites for SuperTorrents.org

BUT please remember, to use private torrents you must seed to keep your ratio up, thats how they all work.

Might be your ISP filtering you? I download all my stuff to seedboxes at 100mb line speed and then download it over scp to my ADSL connection at 700kb/s which is the most my connection can take.
