Ovi maps has been free on Nokia for a while now, does the job well.
But yes, Google based stuff will probably have more impact on Tomtom than Nokia

i have the free ovi maps on my phone, sure it works, but i still use my tomtom purely because its a bigger display, easier to use faster etc.
But if i didnt already own a tomtom it would probably make me think twice about buying one now

id be interested to see how it compares to the tomtom app.
I didnt think Navicon or the other one was nearly as good as tomtom.
That being said, I wouldnt have paid the figure tomtom are asking for it.
Thank god for torrents

Ace I just can't wait until they sort out the damn Applications saving software. It can only save onto the phone's memory just now which is shite... Whenever they sort it out so I can save onto the memory card I'll be fucking delighted as it's really an outstanding phone.

My Ovi maps works perfectly without a connection, I do everything in offline mode, if it needs to update I log on to my home network and let it do it all from there, job done.

sounds awesome
It sounds awesome then take a look at how many of the android units actually have it and its only a fraction.
Android is already suffering due to all the various levels out there. 1.5, 1.6, 2.0 2.1 UK operators are very hesitant to update any of the systems. Software is often only supported at the latest one meaning many Android handsets you can still buy won't have many of the 'new great' features people talk about.
They needed to make it much much smoother to upgrade so that manufaturers would have no problem with doing it.

That's what happens with all phones, except apple.
Orange are 2 or 3 revisions behind, it always has been that way, it's the operators fault and not the manufacturer.
Apple just tell them what's what and that's it.
Also, it works from 1.6 up, which isn't the latest by a long shot.

I would not totally agree. Apple have it much much easier as they can test it so much quicker due to the lesser number of models / hardware. 3 models at the mo and its job done.
The reason the operators don't support it is because of all the testing involved. Each different handset would need to go through a full testing cycle which is not cheap.
Guy i sit next to at work as 1.6 on his Samsung but he didn't seem to have it today

It's because of operators adding branding to the firmware that causes it.
Apple doesn't let them do it, that's 99% of the issue.
The hardware isn't far off exactly the same in most of the android phones.

Realistically, I think the display on a phone is a bit small for sat nav. I struggle a little with TomTom on my iPhone, but then I think I'm a bit blind...

Realistically the iphone has a larger screen than some sat navs.
The Desire has a 3.7" screen.

Works a treat on my Magic Thanks for the heads-up, although I was happy just using the on screen direction without the voice telling me to turn anyway.
