The biggest problem is that when it quarantines svchost it loses all ability to talk to the network - so all the machines that got the update from the ePO servers are now fucked without manual intervention.

Glad I binned McAfee on our company network a couple of years ago, I put its usefulness up there with Norton

You're not wrong! My work laptop won't work, and my blackberry has been going crazy with email updates from the helpdesk in the US.

McAfee.. bunch of fucking useless twats IMHO.. Can't believe anyone still buys that shit! They even have to resort to paying the likes of DELL to force it down their customers throats.
I got my own problems I'm currently windows updating 12 remote servers that havent been rebooted for 3 years and they are all running critical applications..

Mcafee is actually very good.
This is the first time they have ballsed up in a long time.
But people do like to jump on bandwagons.
Its good enough for our entire network, which is about 1 million+ computers. Rather than just automatically updating, always review what your installing on updates first.
Although granted, this was meant as an important upgrade. The patch wasn't installed here.

Is it good enough for 1 million + computers or is it just what's on it and it's a mamoth task to go anywhere else?

Easy to un-install. Just write a script to un-install the software and then re-deploy a different software.
Same way you roll out updates and patches and applications to all these PCs. No different.
How else do you think companies un-install software and update with newer versions without going to every desk
Steve, please stop being an annoying little arse basher. Its getting tedious now. Are you obsessed with my motorcycle?

I know exactly how it's done, I also know that even a small percentage of 1 million of them not working makes it a mammoth task.

That'll teach people for using McAffee tbh.
Like Ian W said, it's not much better than Norton.

We use WSUS on our servers.
Pain in the arse when your having to reboot 20 odd servers after installs. Hell I don't get paid enough (or OT) to do it out of hours

Sophos here, used it in my last place for 3 years and had to put up with McAfee when I first moved into current role as it was on a long contract.
Finally got rid last year and back with Sophos now, not a second of trouble since
