I just built a cheap pc today but have a problem.
When I press the power button it starts up but cuts out after 5-10 seconds.
I cant work out what the problem is.
spec:
Gigabyte K7 Triton series GA-7VKMP
VIA KM266 Chipset
(on-board sound and graphics)
256Mb DDR 2100 RAM
40Gb 7200 Maxtor HDD
16X DVD ROM
48X cd re-writer
17" Monitor
Anyone got any ideas
Dont slate the spec as its just something cheap i'm building for someone.

If it was me, id take everything off and rebuild.
might be loads things., heat sink not on, ram fucked.
1st step run with cpu ram n hard drive gpu Nothing else.
perhaps even look for touching metals shorting it out.

Do you hear the fan start to turn, does it make any noise before shutting off again?
Most computers are designed to power-down if the CPU gets too hot (which will happen VERY quickly on higher-end CPUs without cooling).
But as Super_si suggested, I'd strip it down and build up from the basics. Just put motherboard, cpu, memory, cd-rom and hard-drive in, see if that works......you've got less to trouble-shoot that way, and then you can build up piece-by-piece once that's all working.

And diag beeps or light arrays on the board on turn on? If so look in the manual under trouble shooting.

Luckily I didnt power up when I tried to kill myself.
Right,
I'm gonna go and take it all apart.
I cant get to the BIOS because it doesnt boot up long enough 10seconds at the most.
The cpu fan spins.
I'll let you know how I get on.
Does an AMD XP2000 procesor run 100 or 133MHz system bus?

i think touching somewhere, Make sure theres enough thermal paste amd are very bad for over heating

I was gonna say though, you have got the 0.18micron core and not the 0.13micron core (think the XP 2000+ is 0.13?).... might need a new bios firmware, or it might not even support the new core...

No troubleshooting in the manual! can ya beleive it?
No beeps. Just the RAM light on the m/b comes on. Thats just to say, "Dont take the RAM out right now"

Actually I lie, the 2000+ is still the palomino core so you should be fine

m/b, ram and cpu were bought as a package.
All approved to work together

Take out the RAM and see if the thing beeps at you. Might need to re-insert the ram -- can sometimes be a bit dodgy....

Well what do you think is killing the power if it's a health problem then?
If it's the wrong core, it would possibly kill it cos it couldn't identify the CPU correctly and doesn't want to run the core at the wrong voltage...

Depending on the motherboard you wouldn't even get a display with out a CPU. The CPU initial program counter would point into the bios, and with the cpu, most motherboards would do sweet FA....
