I've been getting more and more tempted with a mk IV/mk V 1.9 diesel golf.

Budget is between 2-3k, for that I should be able to get something with less than 70-80k miles with MOT and tax.

It should have better build quality than my Corsa, alot more power, very similar mpg.

Obviously a con is that I have to spend money to get one, and I'd have to fit a tow-bar too. I can take my subs/amp/head unit with me into a Golf, and I'm not too attached to any of the other mods I've done to the Corsa.

And it's still easily mod-able...

You won't get any sort of decent one for that budget, you'd need to double the miles.

No chance he'd get a good example with sub 130,000 miles for his budget.

They hold their value well.

I'll agree my budget is tight for a mk5. Should get a decent mk4 for £2k though.

You won't, I've been looking, although it depends what decent means to you.

For £2k I'd hope for a sub 100k miles, with a decent chunk of MOT and no major rust or damage. Although the more I look the further I seem to get from that! It seems to be all or nothing, you either get a 1998 onwards model for £2-3k or a 1994 model for about £600.

Edit: Can't quite seem to find the boundary between mk3 and 4. I'm assuming it's 97/98 time. I wouldn't mind a mk3 if it was in good cond. But the point of me buying a golf is that I go up in the world (slightly).

Cars seem to be holding their value far too well.

Punto's are still selling for the same as they were 6 months ago. Go figure.

I mean something like this would be ideal:

1998 mk4
87k miles
Bigger VW alloys, lowered, looks like some skirts too, tinted windows
£1340.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201016357128301/sort/priceasc/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_100000_miles/price-to/3000/fuel-type/diesel/model/golf/make/volkswagen/page/1/postcode/le35ld/radius/100?logcode=p

Sold though, but still.

None of them are decent to me, as I said, depends what you class as decent and that's only from teh adverts, could be worse when seeing them in person.

There are 6 cars under £2k, within 100miles of my home address on Autotrader, with less than 100k miles. At least 2 of those will be clean enough to fit my bill.

Time to get saving I think! I want a mk4 diesel golf!

So decent to you would be mint then??The cars i have posted arent brand new,so for the money he has to spend, they are imo, decent.
Yes age related marks are to be expected with most cars of that age. Then again, they might be fine when seeing them in person.

I've got a GT TDi 130 decent enough car nothing brilliant, much better build than a Corsa B.

Easy return 50+ mpg

£2-3k for a good example, I'd be more thinking £5k and if you wanted a good condition low milage mk5 diesel double it!

2300 less than what youd be thinking and described as being in good condition.

It's got 124k miles, that's not low mileage, it's about double what low mileage is.

People almost always lie when selling cars so you never know until you look at it.

Its not low no,but its not high either. Its just over average with FSH.

And he hasnt stated it needs to be low mileage.Just decent enough condition.Which most that i have posted are.

Yes viewing a car is essential imo too.But what your saying could apply to a low mileage,5k example.

P.S,mileage shouldnt be an issue if the car has been looked after.
