I had this problem once until I answered the phone and said very calmly.. "Fuck off you CUNT". It was some young girl on the end of the phone as well, they never called back.

I calmly asked them where they got my number from, then told them that they were breaching the Data Protection Act of 1988 which is a Criminal offence and they should removed me from their list or I would report them and their company. I also told them that if they or anyone they shared information with contacted me again without prior consent I would take them to court and push for the maximum fine for such a contradiction, which is £500k.
* not strictly true but stuns them enough to stop calling you

I had a call from Money Saving Expert or some rubbish earlier As soon as she said what the company was and asked how I am I hung up. I get far too many sales calls on my mobile

I learnt it from an old boss of mine, he would go absolutely crackers at cold callers, then have a rant about it for ages afterwards .... It must have sunk in, it does work though.
basically companies can't call you if you don't want them too so just ask them to stop and they will .... TPS is great as it basically tells them all to stop calling you without you waiting for them to call first

TBH, the second i realise its a sales call...i put the phone down.
When i first moved into my flat, i used to get 10 per day...at least. Now, i get none what so ever.

I like to string them along, asking where they are calling from over and over and asking them difficult questions as 9 times out of 10 they are calling from India and working from a script.

The last time i got a call like this (and havent had one for 3 weeks now) i just asked the girl what knickers she was wearing, asked if she would like to join me for a goat sacrifice and then let me insert the goats insides in her fanny (the gf was listening to this and was absolutely shocked at the time). She put the phone down and i never got a call back!
I was gutted, all i wanted was a couple of pics for the thread!

usually pakistani's call me up. makes me laugh.
had an irish guy phone me the other week asking if i needed double glazing. nope. wouldn't get off the phone and kept asking about different things he could do.

I sometimes use the Data Protection line although it's normally to ask for the address so I can make a Subject Access Request to see what they hold on me.
Depends how bored I'm feeling. More recently I just tell them I'm not interested and put the phone down.
Don't get that many though, although I am registered with TPS on both land line and mobile. Probably helps.

Most of the time they don't even get chance to say hello when they phone me. If theres a delay when I answer it I put the phone straight down. We get shit loads though! Mostly those automated ones which do my head in
