You'd be surprised what damage even a handgun/revolver can do to a human head, all these films you see where people get shot and it leaves a little hole and a bit of blood are obviously toned down for tv/cinema, google a website called bloodshows if you want to see some gory stuff obviously its very nsfw and some of it makes 3 men one hammer look tame, what has been seen cannot be unseen.
And by the sound of the shots being fired its probably some kind of assault rifle.
