A little while ago I posted about where to get hold of an old oil drum to make a BBQ from. I got hold of one and here it is so far.
The drum
Mate helping out
Assembly Line
Still got to adjust height, taking about 200mm off bottom of legs
Chopped down a plant rack/shelf thing I found in a charity shop to hang utensils from
rack
Lid marked up - having a quarter lid rather than slicing the drum in half
That's where I am for now. Got a couple of handles for the lid and a stainless steel ventilator cap coming off ebay.
Trying to track down some 1" weld mesh to use as the grill, need fair amount, having a shelf at the bottom to allow a little air flow under coals, then the actual grill shelf and then an upper shelf to keep things warm on. If anybody knows where I can get some fairly cheap?
Having a small wooden shelf to the the left of the drum and then a lower shelf underneath

ignoring the photo of my god daughter with a calf on her Grandad's farm; this is their calor gas bottle BBQ in the back ground - its awesome! Normally go up there on bonfire night as they're high on the hillside so you overlook the whole of Stoke on Trent and see all the fireworks going up from right over the city; its brilliant with the BBQ going and watching the chavs throw rockets at one another 5/6 miles away

Looking good so far, my aunties mate did a similar thing, but no where as accurate, took about an hour to put together if that. Was good until the "wire rack" for the food didn't accommodate cooked sausages (they fell through).

As soon as i seen this project i immediately thought of this;
BBQ Project
I don't think for a minute anyone else would be that daft but be careful none-the-less. I love the whole diy projects. Saves money too.

That is one of my concerns I believe the drum contained something for the food industry but it does stink, think my plan is to fill it with water first

Yeah there are a lot of cheap BBQs about but this thing should last a long long time and will probably withstand a nuclear blast. Part of the fun is the building so the time spent doing it is enjoyed.
Had a quote for the grills at £150

I'm after 2 sections, 84x50cm and 84x25cm in stainless steel. Trying a guy on ebay but locally that was the only place I could find who could supply those sizes. If anybody knows anywhere or anybody that can do better please let me know!

You can get grilles for £1, same place that we got ours.
Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tescos or Asda

I used some thick mesh from local diy shop, cut to size, was about 20quid, cut the drum in half, had enough mesh to make 2 bbq's out of the two halves, i get a fair bit of cooking going on when i light them up like.

Aye, stainless steel, similar looking to what you would get from a trolley, but iirc they are chrome plated? which isnt great if you are putting meat on them.
If i was doing it again, i would get some normal food grade mesh, and make a frame to go around the edge, and mebbies a cross section on it & spot weld it in place, then you get the exact size you need, and is removable & strong.

Looks spot on
However....
What if you and say your missus or something want to have a quick bbq you have to use a ton of coal just for a few steaks and burgers lol!

I think disposables still have their place. This will be the party BBQ. Infact I may get my dremel out and engrave that on the lid

Disposables never get hot enough to cook on properly.
What you could do is put a lower grill on so that you don't have to fill the whole thing up and split it into three compartments so that you can have all or part of it filled and burning...

Update:
Last part has been slow, my battery powered angle grinder drains the batteries really quick, think it needs the more powerful type. But managed to get most bits done.
Found a 'replacement bbq grill' kit in B&Q which included a large grill and warming shelf, so got a couple of them, will fix the shelf above the main grill to the back. Going to put a couple of brackets for the grill to rest on and I have some mesh I got from a scrappy to put on the bottom to allow some air to get below and around the coal
Need to put a couple of diagonal braces on the ends to straighten it up and then get a fire going inside to clean up the drum. Lick of paint possibly too. Nearly there.
Made some chilly and cheese sausages yesterday for a friends bbq. Going to knock up some specials for the big unveiling
