...my Dads run out of Diesel in his Jaguar, am i right in thinking if a diesel runs empty you need to take it to a garage to re-start it?
its a S-type Diesel btw

Does it have a little "grenade" shaped rubber pump in the engine bay? You can reprime it yourself using that iirc.

Sure it's not got a primer in the engine bay? Like the little rubber ball the doctor uses to take blood pressure.

put some diesel in and try it .. will prob take some time to fire up, tell him to hold the throttle open when trying too. some newer diesel engines wont start at all if there is low fuel pressure to the rail. and may need to go to a garage.

A lot of modern diesels have an electronic scavange/primer pump.. Fill it with diesel and flick the ignition see if you hear a pump go

I ran my Ibiza TDi dry once, just fill it with diesel and keep turning it over. It might run a bit shit for a few seconds and the black smoke is always funny but it should go

I've never tried it, but I'd assume fuel in the tank then start pumping the wee ball. The couple of cars I've seen it on have a piece of clear tubing beside it, so if that's the case try starting it when you see the fuel in the pipe.

Found you have to manualy pump the Citroen Dispatch when run dry. That was a 57 plate

A Common Rail will re-prime itself using the electric fuel pump just as an electronic fuel injected petrol engine would.

I did it in my golf playing the petrol light chllenge. Started fine afterwards.

Quite easy tbh. I drove from Liverpool to Rochdale on the fuel light and then again from Rochdale to Bolton. Forgot the light was on Rochdale to Bolton Ford Connects seem to just run on fuel lights forever
