I did this with my iphone 3gs.
Claimed got £600 and then gave it to my sister.
Basically you just need to jailbreak the phone first, then they can't brick it.

Do it mate, I've done it a few times now, easy money! I never once got caught and they never even barred the old phone. Just tell them you lost the box and dont know the imei number
