After some more deliberation I have decided it would be cheaper and easier (partially because I don't have a passport) to just go on a holiday somewhere in this country rather than road-tripping it to the continent.
What I'm looking for at the moment is just ideas, so where in the south of the country have people been that is a decent place to stay for a couple of days?

What sort of holiday are you looking for?
I've stayed in Bath at Bailbrook Lodge but they've put the prices up - mainly because I've been there and the fans can't get enough of it.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm after tbh, which is why I'm looking for ideas. I don't usually like to do too much on holiday as it's meant to be a break. Too many times I've come back more tired than when I went
So I suppose somewhere fairly chilled out but with a few attractions/things to do so I don't pull my eyes out with boredom.

If you'd rather go abroad just get a passport. Hardly a massive job that.
Otherwise defo Bournemouth. Stop in Poole at one of the nice hotels down there - check out Sandbanks Hotel.

Eastbourne is rammed with old people. Bournemouth and Poole have britains best beaches (IIRC) and are pretty exclusive locations.
edit - spelling

I lived in Cornwall for years and the only place I would recommend it for a young person is Newquay.

We went to a holiday cottage near modbury which is just outside Plymouth in devon
thoroughly enjoyed it was lots to do then spent 2 nights at Newquay before heading home
was far better than going abroad especially with a small child

Thanks for all the suggestions so far
Last year we went on a family holiday to Newquay and from what I could tell it was more a sort of night-life place, which isn't really my scene. I'm happy to potter about in the day, have a couple of pints after dinner then go to bed
Scotland would be epic Mike, but a bit further than I was thinking

Cornwall is very nice. Just stay clear of Newquay unless you are on a surf holiday or like chavs. It's worth a day visit tho.
EDIT Just seen you've been to Newquay so you will know the score!

I think we stayed in Woolacombe Bay once, it's not far from where my cousins live now so it might have something to do with seeing them
